During this time in my life I did not have an understanding of the implications this would have on my life. From day one of Basic Military training to the present, I have felt a great sense of pride and have had an undying commitment to serve this great organization, its mission and our country to the best of my ability. ren introduce their parents to the class, and then the parents talk about their job. One of my classmates brought his mother who was with the US Military as a Marine soldier, apparently I was the only one amazed by the fact. I was pretty impressed with it and for several days kept playing with my brother's old toy copies of Automat Kalashnikov and shotguns. I kept striking random stuff at home and expectedly breaking them, so my weaponry was taken away. With the days I stopped searching for them and moved on, completely forgetting about my current dream to become a Marine Soldier.…

My awakening to the wonder of human cultural diversity began with my entry into Army Basic Training. Living in an open barracks for three months with women from every corner of the United States opened my eyes and mind to the amazing variety of cultural groups just within our own country. Since then, I have lived, worked, and traveled in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. I gained invaluable cross-cultural experience as a member of a multi-national task force, which provided Emergency Medical Service in Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm. In addition to these experiences, my Army training has enabled me to develop strong skills in leadership, teambuilding, and organization.…

Not many people in this country would sign up for a job where you can get killed any given day, where you can be shipped to any given place in the world at any time, or where they are forced to create a will at the age of 18 or 19. Many young men across this country sign up for a minimum of a 4 year contract to join the United States military. In my opinion they are the bravest people in the country and rightfully so. They have to leave their loved ones to protect us from all enemies foreign and domestic. I had the pleasure of interviewing three of my friends who are serving or who have served before, and we will take a look through their eyes.…

Minus one plus nine. Writing about my personal experience, made me think about all the Noncommissioned officers (NCOs) who led me throughout my military career and personal life. It also made me recall the obstacles I faced and overcame throughout my career that shaped me to who I am today. "Minus one plus nine" is the symbolism that I use to describe the story of how I joined the Army as an Enlisted Soldier and the barriers that I have surpassed throughout my career to reach the rank of Sergeant Major (E-9).
