On the day of the competition, I felt petrified of what was going to happen and how I would perform on the tests. Overall, my team answered 5 out of 10 correctly and I felt defeated. Tears welled up in my eyes because I felt a sense of disappointment that I had let the rest of my team down.
Two weeks flew by and it was time to attend the awards ceremony. Many medals were passed out to students from various schools and I haven’t received one yet. I felt embarrassed that I was not going to receive an award while most of my peers have received at least one medal already. Suddenly, I heard my name called for a 1st place medal in math and I was in shocked not knowing if it was me or not.
All I heard was my friends saying “Taylor, it’s you, it’s you! Go up to the stage.”
The evening ended with my school, Peters Elementary, being the first and second place winners for the entire competition. This experience taught me that hard work pays off because the extensive hours that my team and I dedicated to studying after school and on the weekends led us to winning first place
