Personal Narrative: Joining Peace Corps

Improved Essays
Joining Peace Corps has been on my mind for a number of years; however, I have always been hesitant due to my own self-doubt. I questioned my ability to live away from my family for such a long length of time, and I was worried about what would this opportunity mean for the professional ladder I was trying to climb. However, life has recently taught me that although there are challenges, I do not want to live a life of regret.

My family means a lot to me. I have three nephews who have mysteriously become young men before my very eyes. My brother and I are working on our relationship, and it continues to heal each day. My parents and I have become even closer since I left home over 11 years ago. I have become very independent to the point

The day I came to Job Corps, I remember leaving my house while my whole family was crying because I was leaving. The reason why they were crying is because I had never gone away from home before. Even though they were sad, at the same time they were happy because I was moving on with my life to better myself. It was hard for my dad to let me go because I am the oldest daughter and I have never separated from my dad. My little sister and my brother were crying too.…

I normally don't post things like this on Facebook but ironically, I came across a fantastic video from the Peace Corps a few days ago... As many of you know, I want to join the Peace Corps after college but many don't really know how I could "waste" my time serving or "why" I would do such a thing... Well, on the video, a Caucasian volunteer stationed in the Dominican Republic took a bus and was immediately asked whether or not he was a Peace Corps volunteer by the driver( based on his skin, eyes and hair color-…

The most memorable day for me was the day when I came to Job Corps for the first time. There was an insane amount of highlights all that day. Besides the new facility, there were a lot of new people and new rules that I was required to follow. It was the change of scenery, temperature, and lifestyle that I found quite difficult to adjust to. The changes that I have made from that day up until now still amaze me.…

The first time I heard about Job Corps was around December 2016. It was around my birthday; I had just turned 17. At that time, I wasn’t in school because I just got expelled for the second time. I couldn’t go back to a normal high school because of that. The only option I had in order to get my diploma was alternative school.…

Joining the Peace Corps is something that I have contemplated on doing since my freshmen of Year College. As a child growing up in a developing country Cameroon, I have experience to some degree what it means to be unnoticed and uncared for. so when came to the united states in 2004 with my siblings, one of my high school teachers asked the class to write on a piece of paper what each of us would like to be when we grow up. As I remember vividly, I wrote “I want to become a political diplomat or a lawyer.” The reasons I choose these career paths were unknown to me at the time.…

I'm going to write about my experience at job corps so far. The first day I came to Job Corps was really different. It was nothing what I expected ,I thought it was going to be something like Zoey 101 with lots of freedom and respect from students and staff but its nothing like that. There's not really any freedom here for minors which I dislike. My Grandparents came in to drop me and my sister off and sign some papers.…

F is for FRIENDS. My family has always been a bigger force in my life than my friends, but my friends have certainly played a large role in making me the person I am today and in shaping how I see the world. Back in elementary school, my friendships were very context-dependent, changing year to year based on who was in my class. During the summer, my sister was my best friend, and that was totally okay. In sixth grade, my friendship landscape changed.…

Myself Before the Marine Corps, and Myself After (Item to Item) Before I had joined the Marine Corps I was much different than I am now. During high school it was as if I was sleep walking through my entire life. I had no ambitions, and I had now worries. A worry free life might be what some people are looking for, but I found that I lacked responsibility and discipline. During school I would either sleep or simply ignore the instructor, my attention to detail was completely nonexistent.…

Another book that we have to read together as a class, ugh. Class readings were never a passion of mine, but Strength in What Remains was something different. Which made me think; if he had people in his life which made a difference, are there inspirational people who pushed and influenced me?…
