Personal Narrative: Joining A Team On Team Competition

The droning sound of sharp exhales and the snapping of fists on thick cotton gis started to become something I wanted a break from, not something I wanted a break for. I started practicing kempo at the Guardian martial arts dojo when I was a child, since both my brother and my dad were also doing it, it became somewhat a family activity. After a few years, the forms and workouts that were done became dull to me, I felt that I wanted something new to do if anything at all. Thinking that it was the dull mat and lighting of the indoor dojo was the problem, I decided to shove myself at something that was outside. I ended up trying soccer, and joining a team. Enjoying the grass and team on team competition, I felt like this is what I would do for fun. Four years later, it failed to keep my interest after the age limit peaked for free to play teams, and I searched for something else. Finding that it was not the dronning of Kempo that dulled my interest, but still not wanting to go back to it. I joined a wrestling team for my middle school, still not clicking after a year on the team, I began to look for something else. I began to practice Jiu-Jitsu at the Kaizen BJJ, across the street from my house. Joining both their adult jiu-jitsu classes and their weekend kickboxing and boxing classes. I enjoyed the thought of me being like a videogame character, learning new skills, experience, …show more content…
Due to our connection, and my brother and father practicing martials arts at their dojo, I also began to practice there when I was allowed. Being the youngest in my family practicing, I would sometimes help my brother and father practice their forms for grading to a new belt or if they just needed help. I do not believe that I should or would have changed anything to change this moment. If I decided to quit early, I might of not learned as much or made as many fun memories that I have

Quitting the sport I loved had made me realize that I need to start setting more goals for myself. Before my injury, my goals were mostly just about gymnastics. Now I have to set different goals in real life, which is for the better since I cannot do gymnastics forever. Before my injury gymnastics was all I thought about and I also did much better in school, but I was also more stressed. Gymnastics has taught me so much, especially patience which is why I did so well in school.…

Black Belt Issues Imagine a scenario where someone has been working hard to achieve something that they’ve been dying to have for four years, and then suddenly right as the time came to finally receive it something happens and now there seems to be no way to get it at all. Think of how they’d react, and more importantly, how they’d feel. That feeling is what I went through when I first moved to Webb City.…

It was October 16, 2012. I was in seventh grade, just a boy to become someone or something. We were loading the bus with our two coaches, Coach Voss and Coach Larh. Coach Voss the offensive coach who liked to make us run, and coach larh, our Defensive coach who taught me everything I known about the defensive side of the ball. This was a big game for me and my fellow teammates this game was going to set the tone for the rest of the season to show that we can be successful.…

Before I joined the golf team, I was quiet and reserved; however, golf has helped shape me into a better leader and teammate because it has improved my communication with others. As I have met a countless number of people of all different personalities, I feel more confident in how I handle working with other people. On the course, I have learned how to be both a competitor as well as a supportive playing partner. Interacting with a wide range of people has taught me to adapt to different situations because some people are very easy to talk to where others are not so much. When you are with someone for a good five to six hours, you have to learn how to interact with people, which is hard for introverts like me.…

My swim team has an honored tradition of shaving their heads the night before the district swim meet. Districts is by far the biggest meet of the year where all swimmers attempt to break personal records and qualify for state. This shaving of the heads promises a possible time drop of maybe one tenth of a second and also builds a sense of team unity. In 2013, my freshman year of high school, I refused to partake in this sacred ritual.…

When it came time to choose what sport I wanted to do I chose wrestling, because as Dan Gable eloquently said “Once you’ve wrestled everything else in life is easy.” When I first started wrestling I was lazy and disinterested. I tended to float through life not putting forth my best effort. I soon realized wrestling and anything else I decided to do would require massive amounts of dedication; it caused me to reevaluate myself and what I wanted to do with my life.…

I discovered that fencing is one of my favorite activities to do and that I can do things that seem hard if I really try. I had to push myself against an opponent that was older than me and learn new techniques to try to beat him. I felt that this was a coming of age experience because I had to step out of my comfort zone and push myself to succeed in a new sport. I never was able to beat my rival but I learned that I don’t always have to beat my opponent to get something out of the experience or to improve.…

Fortunately, my parents found a way to channel my excess energy; they enrolled me in taekwondo classes. Color Guard I remember when I was a little girl going to practices with my mom. I was always so amazed by what I had seen. The flags, riffles, sabers, the mat, the props, hearing the music, - it was all so beautiful to me. I used to watch my mom spin and teach the girls the work to the routine; I was mesmerized by it all. I loved watching the colorful flags spin around in every direction possible, the sabers spinning around and the gym lights hitting them just right and making them shine in the air, and the way everyone looked unison when they were spinning.…
