Personal Narrative: Joining A Soccer Team

Improved Essays
In 2012, I joined my first organized team sport, soccer. It was in late August and my mom asked, “Adriane, your dad and I talked about you getting involved in a team sport and thought you might like to join a soccer team.” I had no clue on how to play soccer, what the rules were, or what the positions were! We looked around for different clubs in the area and mom decided I would play for a county league called Severn Soccer Club (SAC). A week before my first practice my mom said, “We are going to have to go out and get your soccer equipment.” “What do you mean soccer equipment? Don’t they make you order a uniform?” “Yes, Adriane but you need soccer cleats, shin guards, and the right size soccer ball!” “Oh, I didn’t know!” I was placed …show more content…
I didn’t quite understand why my mom had signed me up but she said, “Adriane if you tell me your dream is to play high school and college soccer, let me show you the competition out there, because honey, you're a dime a dozen in wanting that same dream!” The first tryout I was nervous because I didn’t know what to expect and let’s just say there were hundreds of girls trying out. As a matter of fact, 600 girls tried out for my age group. After that first tryout I understood what my mom meant. While driving back from school one day out of the blue I said, “I really want to make that team!” “What team?” My mom said. “ODP, mom!” “Oh, now you want to make the team! What changed your mind because you had questioned me as to “why" you were doing this?” “I really like the level of play, the girls know what they are doing and it’s really good soccer!” “Well, only you have control of doing your best and bringing your best skills out on the field". “You can’t control those coaches from picking you to the final round” was my mom’s advice. Each tryout was intense and we waited for the results to be posted. After three rounds of tryouts, I made the team! Playing for ODP has been one of my highlights thus far. Apart from traveling and participating in tournaments, I was given the opportunity to go away this summer to Gettysburg College for 5 days of training with girls from across the Mid-Atlantic region and learned many valuable skills. My ODP coach in Gettysburg taught me many things. He told me, “Instead of facing your opponent straight face her pushing her outside with your hip on an angle and your body in front protecting the

“Beep Beep Beep” It is 5 am and my hand can’t make it to the alarm clock before the voices in my head start telling me that it is too early and too dark to get up. But I did not ask for their opinion, I rise like a phoenix and before I know it, I am drenched in sweat and walking out an empty gym in route to the soccer field. Why you ask because I was told I was not good enough, too uncoordinated, and too tall to play soccer and I was on a mission to prove them wrong. There was a month left before the traveling soccer team that everyone told me I was not good enough to play for came back to town for their yearly tryouts.…

Soccer was something I invested 11 years of my life into, and quitting abruptly put my parents into a frenzy. To my parents this was just another stupid decision, but to me it was the start of my independence. From this day on I began to make choices because I personally wanted to. I stopped caring what my parents thought of me and promised myself to do more for myself. I began excelling in school, not because of the pressure my parents put on me to succeed, but because I knew I could do better if I applied myself.…

My soccer team was together for a very long time and we were all great friends. As we kept getting older we needed more girls to have enough to play and they always fit right in with us and got to know us very well. That changed this fall when the team split. None of us were happy, at least six or seven girls quit playing soccer and I was one of them. A few girls went to different clubs but the rest went to CBSC ( Council Bluffs Soccer Club) but I didn’t because I’m not a big fan of soccer anymore. After getting hurt all the times I did in soccer I realized that it's not worth it if you’re going to be out for a third of the season and if your injury makes you miss out on other sports.…
