Throughout life, we pull inspiration from anything that we can apply to our own situations. That is to say, in our times of hardship we lean towards something that we can relate to in order to comfort ourselves. This is the case even in my life. Early on, I struggled with school and making friends. This led to depression, depression that a child shouldn't even have to go through. Eventually, I overcame that depression as I progressed through my grade school education. However, I would have never have made it had I not been introduced to one who's struggle was even greater than my own. His name was James Eugene Redmond, or "Jim" Carrey.(Wikipedia) Jim Carrey's life inspired me whenever I needed help by comparing his hardships to mine and even …show more content…
Consequently, his grades suffered, and he ended up dropping out. It’s only logical being that young working a job that he would get depressed. (Mentalhealthdaily.com) Even as a child, he sacrificed his happiness and peace of mind to keep a roof over his family's head. His decision to become an actor with the goal of never being forced to live like that again is what drove him to his success. It is in this aspect that Carrey's story motivated me. I told myself things like "At least I'm not that Guy." or " There are people out there who don't have a house to live in." Phrases like these helped me to become more optimistic. I started to see the world in a new light. As a result, I was able to cast off my depression and began to make friends in school. Even further, I began to thrive in school. I just couldn't let Jim Carrey pass me up. However, the most valuable thing that Jim taught me was not how to make friends, it was how to visualize your dreams and turn them into reality. Two weeks into 8th grade, I was worlds above my peers. On that night I made it my number one short term goal to become the first member of my family to go to college. I drafted up my first college essay and nailed it to the wall. At the end of my senior year, I framed the essay in a portrait that now hangs up in my dorm room. That is my testimony to how making a promise to yourself and never accepting less pays off in the long

In my personal journey I have come to create a habit of of viewing the world through optimistic eyes. I must admit that there are times in which I am so caught up in the intensity of a situation that I forget to change my perspective, but I always return to a thought of “What can I learn from this?”. I have been rejected, isolated, criticized, and considered inferior, and it caused me to feel unloved, worthless, and incapable of doing anything. For a long time I was bitter and all my thoughts were constantly focused on what I had been told. I entered depression, and at the pit of where I was I realized that I did not have to believe what I was told.…

I felt like I needed to be the one to break the cycle of depression, I felt like the author of “The Mirror” in a way. In “The Mirror,” Loretta Stewart states “Today, I’m glad I broke the mirror. It’s symbolic of my desire to break the cycle of failure in my family.” In my instance it wasn’t really a thing that had been going on for decades like in “The Mirror,” but it was still a cycle and I felt like if I didn’t take that step and try to break the cycle that it would just continue.…

We discussed a few different topics such as what his life was like being a kid, what he thought of school, and how he knew my grandmother was the one for him. It sometimes got off tracks talking about his children and what happened to them, but for most of the time we stayed on topic. We talked a lot about what life was like and his jobs and his life overall. This interview started about his life in Tennessee and it wasn't easy for him back then, he had to walk miles to school and his dad wasn't around very often.…
