Personal Narrative: Jet Skiing

I peer over the edge, wincing at the jet black body of water beneath me. I have just climbed a series of boulders, and am now at the top of a cliff, a couple hundred feet above the ground. How I ended up here, I am not quite sure. Physically, I am well aware; Mentally…not so much. For much of my life, I had remained far more cautious than my peers, preferring the safety of the ground to the risks of water and heights Yet, for some unusual reason, I had decided on this particular day that I would attempt cliff diving. I had always sought to avoid similar experiences, from scuba diving – which I opted out of – to jet skiing, which I begged to be excluded from, but ultimately participated in; the point being that, I had been far from a risk taker.

Nevertheless, there I stood, way above the ground with nothing but a wavering spirit, staring down at the murky waters of Barton Springs. I gazed at the bottomless pit for what seemed like ages. Suddenly, I was soaring through the air, hands together, adrenalin rushing, gaping at the calm, deadly, scene of water laid out before me. And just like that, it was over. I now appreciate life to its fullest, doing things I would have once been hesitant to do. Cliff diving was a gateway to approach my risky endeavors without an overly cautious fear. No longer am I afraid to invest in a business idea formulating in my mind and bring it to life, or to start a project out of fear of not finishing it. The little things that I was once wary of, now complete me. The everyday applications of this change in mindset are not extreme, but they are extensive. In hindsight, I am glad that I took the initial risk. I’ll always look before I leap, but now I know that, with the right mindset, I can

Many people are drawn to the thrill seeking risk of skydiving, and some people become overconfident in their next jump and forget to pull their parachute (as seen in Star Trek The Future Begins). In Into the Wild, Krakauer displayed many themes. The importance of risk taking, one of the main themes, is constantly brought up throughout the book. Crashing underwater in the North Georgia mountains, I wondered how I ended up here, upside down in the freezing cold water of the Cartecay river. My friend Jackson is a thrill-seeking kayaker, the total opposite of me. He’s outgoing and loves adventure, while I’m a bit introverted and cautious. Last winter Jackson convinced me to go kayaking, assuring me the river was easy to navigate and harmless.…

The thing about running is that you hate it until it’s over, at least for me that’s true. Personally, I like running, and it gives me a chance to get out and work towards something. All throughout high school, I’ve run track, and for two years I ran cross-country, both are great sports. The two years I ran cross-country made me wish I ran all four years. If you’re part of more than one sport, it’s natural to choose a favorite.…

Like with skiing, even though it has started a slew of my injuries, I am always coming back for more; it has taught me to persevere through any adversity. Also through my sailing against Lambert, I have learned to always look on the bright side of a dark cloud of failure; whether it be in school, athletics, or everyday life, whenever I lose confidence in myself everything feels like a house of cards in a hurricane. Instead, I have decided to smile and let skiing and sailing turn me into a floater that bounces from a fresh cloud of snow to the rhythm of the…

As we arrived, all you could see in the cove were boats lined up and tied together, people jumping from 30 feet into the water below, and the sound of people laughing and having a good time. We tied our jet skis to the side of my grandparent’s boat, took off our life vests, and jumped into the water. As we swam to the edge of the cliffs, I remember the sound of the waves crashing against them from people jumping and boats coming and going. Once we climbed out of the water and made our way up the steep cliff, I remember thinking, “I hope I don’t slip and fall”. Surprisingly, as clumsy as I am, we made it to the top with no problem.…
