Originally, our mission was to save marine animals, an ambitiously lofty idea. Problem was, I had an abundance of ideas, but no clue how to pursue them. Does our club protect marine life from overfishing? Exploitation? Commercialization? Pollution? General neglect? I knew saving marine animals was a great idea, but suddenly, the list of “hows” drowned me with endless possibilities.
Word about the club quickly got around and it was evident that other students shared my love for the ocean and wanted to join the newly formed organization. The time for the first meeting came, and excitement flourished within me at the sight of 40 students waiting to be called to order.
Our first meeting began on a positive note; students were participating and contributing their ideas. However, a realization struck me. Instead of having one concentrated measurable focus, our purpose was overly broad. I have since relocated to a different school this year, and I have recently learned that the club is being run by its former vice president. He is having excellent success by utilizing the changes that were implemented when I was president and has both garnered and retained a sizable number of members. Since I still have a strong passion for the club, it was particularly heartwarming to know that the club continues to thrive. Although, I am no longer a member, it is gratifying to me to watch what started as a strong passion become a tangible
