It’s friday morning in chemistry class. Everyone is talking about the party for tomorrow night. It was a celebration for all the seniors for graduation, and all the juniors were invited to attend and everyone at the whole school was going to be there. My friend and I were ready for this party. We have never been to a party before so we thought we can go because we don’t wanna be left out and we also don’t want no one to tell us anything for not going to this huge party. Maryland, in the year 1984. I was a 15-year-old teenager growing up in Reisterstown, Maryland - a town about an hour away from Baltimore. I was just like any other red-blooded American male teenager growing up in 1980's America. I liked video games and Pac- Man, loved "Star Wars" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark", tried my hand at the Rubik's cube, and was concerned about the USSR and nuclear war. Oh yes, I,like millions of other teenagers loved good rock music and was just beginning to discover MTV.…

The Sunday after Thanksgiving, I rather spontaneously---or perhaps, I’d like to think, by the work of the Holy Spirit---got on a night bus and went to church. I arrived at St. Mark’s Cathedral to a contemplative Eucharist in their beautiful chapel. It was soft and lovely and quiet. I love the quiet. I sought it out when I came to college in Seattle, living in “the big city” for the first time this fall, more than a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of people everywhere.…

What Was I Doing I woke up at eight o’clock in the morning like any other day. I got out of the bed and pulled open the curtains to see what a beautiful day it was outside. The sky was crystal blue; the sun was shining, with a slight breeze. I could not have asked for a more perfect day. I went to the kitchen poured a glass of orange juice; and made some bacon, eggs, and toast for breakfast.…

Friday Mornings I rushed my full stomach to my room and I pulled out the bottom of my semi formal clothings and pants drawer. Being the control freak that I am, I also picked out my brother’s outfit. My mother was kind enough to let me select my own outfit to school as a second grader. Enrolled in a small, private, and conservative Christian school, where the moms are very in everyone’s business; not many of my friends were allowed to pick out their “free friday” outfits. Although now, I wish my mother would restrict some of the things I wore.…

I work for my dad on our family ranch in Jones Creek, Texas. The work is hard, backbreaking, and tiring. Everyday when I get home I eat the meal that my momma makes for us: there is no arguing whether or not that is what you are having for supper. Every night I get in bed completely wore out from a hard days work, then I wake up to do it all again in the morning. This job is not for everyone, however it is for me.…

Tuesdays are the best discount days at thrift stores. My mother sometimes took my sisters and I window shopping. Peeking into seemingly ancient items reminded me of biblical stories; bowls with lions and calves adumbrated Isaiah’s prophecy of peace. Noticeable differences of others can be fun way to start conversations, sharing stories and creating friendships. Elongated vowels and straight to the point messages ensued laughter between former strangers.…

I said ok and spent the rest of the night waiting to go to this party unaware of the events that would take place that night. I returned home at about 5 pm to find my roommate on the couch watching TV we had a brief conversation about him going home for the weekend. He left around 6 pm. After he left I spent the next 3 hours trying on clothes (which in hindsight is embarrassing to admit) looking for that perfect look. I eventually settled on the clothes I wanted to wear and was out the door.…
