Personal Narrative: It Is Our Differences

From the time I turned eight years old to now, I have seen my mother's mental illnesses in full effect such as her bi-polar episodes. I have seen an abuse of alcohol on an abnormal level, but I have always had my brother's back me through everything since my dad had moved to a different state and it was just us. Since being a young child, whenever a question arose in a classroom or social discussion about home life, I would always do my best to transition the topic or to avoid the conversation. I felt that I was different from everyone else, because no one had experienced the things I have, and I felt that I should keep these experiences to myself and to my two life long friends. …show more content…

This has been major obstacle for her since her freshman year of high school which is the same year of my biggest struggles with my mother's health and moving into my grandparent's home. Her events truly altered my way of thinking when I see and know people today. Eating disorder's as well as judging before knowing were once mistakes that I would make constantly, but since then, I have become a person who is more accepting and that will interact with people much more

When I was a teenager I worked in a donut shop. It so happened that the place was sold to a family and was not a corporately owned. In the hope of saving money, they decided to cut labor and asked the hostess’ to do all the cleaning, including the washrooms. The age I was at cleaning was not my cup of tea, therefore, I made it clear to the owners I will do everything else, but clean the washrooms, as I don’t even do that at home, and my mom wouldn’t even let me. The owner’s reply was, “you people should be used to that kind of work, what do you mean you can’t do it,” and a whole lot of other inappropriate things that I won’t get into.…

My teacher asked to speak to me urgently one day after class to ask me for a favor. As I followed her into the hall I had no expectations in mind as to what she could need from me. She informed me that a new student with severe social anxiety would be joining us, and I was chosen to help her catch up to the week of school that she missed. I agreed to helping her considering I only needed to help with classwork. The next day when the new student arrived, I greeted her with enthusiasm, hoping to meet a new potential friend.…
