It All Started with a Chicken

Yes, my involvement in agriculture all started with one little chicken. Her name was Cluckens, and I got her by chance when the FFA chapter at my junior high school had extra birds going to the fair, and I signed up to exhibit one and participate in showmanship. Even though she only received a red ribbon and I did not win showmanship, my first county fair was just a precursor for what was to come for me in agriculture, and I was hooked. Not only did I have a prosperous youth career exhibiting poultry across the state, I gained countless experiences in FFA and later 4-H, relationships with many amazing people, a college major, and most importantly, a rewarding future career. It is because of one little chicken

" I believe in the future of agriculture ," these seven powerful words provide an amazing introduction to the FFA Creed . This phrase serves not only as an introduction to the FFA Creed, but also as a basis for my reasoning behind my plan for my part in the future of the cattle industry. As far as knowledge and understanding of the beef industry, I am trying to gain as much experience as I can through opportunities found in organizations and programs ,such as 4-H, FFA, Tennessee Junior Simmental Association, Tennessee Agricultural Enhancement Program, and the Tennessee Cattlemen's Association,, in order to obtain a benefit on the beef industry in Tennessee. I believe that the motto “Once a Falcon, Always a Falcon,” is a perfect motto to describe myself as both a person and student. Growing up, I always took pride of my hometown (Vermilion, Ohio). My hometown, paired with the rollercoaster of experiences I endured throughout middle school and high school, made me who I am today. Granted, there were hard times and struggles, but I would not be where I am today had I not grown from those experiences. As I stated in my application, I represented my school and hometown at the 2013 Buckeye Boys Convention.…

Since my freshman year of high school, my passion for agriculture has flourished. I did not come from an agricultural background as my parents worked for the State and Amtrak, but I was intrigued about California’s leading industry. Up until my freshman year in high school, the closest I had gotten to agriculture was when I would grow a garden of vegetables during the spring for fresh produce. I became involved in my school’s FFA chapter and was infatuated with the FFA from the start. I saw it as a way to become involved as well as to expand my leadership and social skills.…

It was late November on the day of the Egg Bowl in 2014. Mississippi State fans from all over Mississippi were traveling to Oxford to witness the Bulldogs to take on the Rebels. Just two days after Thanksgiving, it was a crisp and cold fall day. At the current time, I was more of a State fan over Ole Miss fan, so on that day I happened to be warmly dressed in maroon. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that an individual child with a desire to gain one Snickers bar, must be prepared to trade no less than three Twix bars. In my household, every bag of fun sized confections was an opportunity for a ridiculous negotiation with a not so ridiculous lesson behind it. When my father loves Snickers just as much as I do, why should he take only one inferior Twix for one Snickers? Critically assessing how much my companion stands to lose versus how much I was willing to pay to get what I want is a skill I have been developing since middle school. Negotiation and debate, human interaction of all kinds have always piqued my interests both academically and recreationally.…

Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life.
