I am a Law Enforcement Officer and this is one skill that can be advantageous especially when in court. Moving forward I hope to improve my communication skills through our coursework and with the help of our facilitators. Like you I struggled in my early years of school especially when it came to public speaking. I have always been very shy and lacked confidence in my communication skills. Due to this fact I found it difficult at times to participate in class.…
Monday, September 21st: My role in clinical today was clinic manager. This role is responsible for helping Mrs. Lutz in running the clinic. The first task of the day was to test the glucose meter to make sure that it is calibrated correctly. At first the glucose meters were not reading correctly.…
How do you summarize 16 years of life into a few minutes? Especially the life of a medically fragile child. I’m going to do my best. Our journey with UI Children’s Hospital began 16 years ago when our daughter Reagen was born. She was transferred to UI Children’s Hospital from our local hospital when she was three days old.…
By the time I received the email announcement that University of Michigan Health System diagnosed me with Acquired Dyscalculia, I felt like sinking into a bottomless glacial. Everything around me appeared as featureless hollow darkness. I heard with a chill on my back that the car accident occurred last summer was speculated to be cause. It was on way home back from Thailand, where I went to support the education at Vieng Neua Primary School as a volunteer. I was afraid, indeed, that the dyscalculia—a name that I had not heard before and a disease I was totally not familiar with—would jeopardize and ruin my study and life.…
Mentor, is a kind of authority. Very rarely is an authority in every respect. There is also a difference between the professional mentor and moral mentor. It would be wonderful if these aspects went hand in hand, but this is rare.…
My first experinnce for externship was at the Pace. I was very nervous and scared at first, I did not know how things work at Pace how do we see our patients and interact with them. On my first day I did my cleaning removable appliance comp done. In the afternoon I was able to help my classmates with dental charting and paperwork.…
At times I think it’s often quite normal for new teachers to become overwhelmed their first year teaching. Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves. In my experience, it was my mentors that made a difference in my career, and prompted me to pay it forward and it is these mentors that I try to emulate in my own mentoring. A mentor serves as a professional role model for the mentee.…
In this paper, I will be summarizing the information from this week’s reading. Additionally, from this week’s reading I will provide examples of how the content applies to my personal spiritual journey. Lastly, I will provide my ideas of how this week’s reading will apply to my future human services career. This week’s reading included chapters nine and ten from the textbook, “Religious and Spiritual Aspects of Human Service Practice” written by James W. Ellor, F. Ellen Netting, and Jane M. Thibault (1999). Religious congregations are described as groups of people that come together for religious purposes.…
An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…
One of my personal goals that I plan to achieve before finishing my internship with Pro-Act is to participate in facilitating a group. One of the things that hindered me in jumping in is the misunderstanding of being able to relate. I was under the impression, that it is better if you have a relatable connection with the members to be able to run the group. I’m learning that is not always the case but, it is helpful.…
This summer I did my internship at Miller Children’s Hospital. I had a great experience where I was able to apply my knowledge and skills. This fall I am back at Miller and I am ready to learn more and get the hands on practice I need to be successful in my career. Some of my fears are approaching new people and even though it seems very repetitive of meeting new people I think it’s difficult sometimes building rapport. Sometime I am just scared of not being able to build the connection with my clients.…
As I walked into the small building, that in fact looked very enormous at the time, I began to anticipate every answer I would give to the person who interviewed me, so that to them, I would at least seem prepared. Although I had practiced my interviewing skills that very morning, I felt anxious and worried. Not knowing what to expect, many different scenarios ran through my mind, all of which weren't making my situation any better. Questions after questions were asked, all which seemed impossible for me to answer, and I felt as though I blew the whole thing. After the interview, many days passed by, and I had convinced myself that I did not get job.…

I have known from a young age that I wanted to do something exceptional in my life. Something about helping others drew me in, so I knew a career in the medical field would be my best fit. It was not until a traumatic day in my life occurred that made me realize I was bound to be a nurse. I have played volleyball for five year, my senior year was not an exception. Volleyball was the only sport I played and my passion.…
