Growing up is tough. Every day people go through life with careers that they may not enjoy. Throughout the past few weeks I got the opportunity to interview two people about their jobs, one being a young adult who just started working, while the other was approaching her mid-life with an established career. The advice from both of these individuals was both eye opening and helpful. The age of the interviewee definitely influenced the responses I received.…

I hate it when I have prepared, a carefully crafted soliloquy, a sentiment of pure splendor, a plethora of plentiful thought, and my script is discard within seconds because the conversation takes a detour. Conversations are inimitable and completely wild. They roam from topic to topic without a glance at the well written thoughts I have so tedious prepare the night before. When I reach a place to interject a bit of my rehearsed dialogue, it comes unnatural and the conversation withers within seconds. This only contributes to the fascination and passion I have for writing.…

During this weekend, I can say that I experienced all three levels of communication. It is something that at first, I did not realize that I was being that particular way. During the course of my day, then I would realize. For example, the I-It communication level is something that I experience everyday and I’m sure we all do. When I pick up my coffee, when I buy clothes, and when I walk into a store etc.…

Have you ever heard a 2-year-old child suddenly shout out a football chant when they were that age and had no clue what it meant? If you haven't, you will be surprised to learn that I actually did that when I was that age. It was in December 1999 when my family had decided to go up to Pennsylvania to visit our relatives for the holidays. I wasn’t much of a talker at that time. As we were arriving at my Aunt Priscilla and Uncle Jim’s house, I sat quietly playing with one of my favorite stuff animals, a beanie baby named piggie.…

What I learned from my elder interview is how my grandfather was drafted in the war and became a service man. My elder interview impacted me by how he didn’t become a soldier and became service man and how he was lucky not getting captured by the North Vietnamese. My grandpa motivated me to keep on working hard even if it’s not your job or responsibility. The interview that impacted me is Cap van Nguyen.…

After spending the first month of my summer playing video games, eating junk food, and binging Netflix shows, I wanted to do something fun while also helping the community. Brainstorming ideas, my mom recommended volunteering at a senior center. While I was not interested at first, I wanted to try new experiences as much as I possibly could. The next day, we went to the Forsyth Senior Center and an old gentleman greeted us with extreme kindness. Asking about any volunteer opportunities at the center, I imagined helping with bingo.…

The patient I chose to be my geriatric patient is an active 81 year old man. For the sake of this project we will refer to him as Chaz. Looking at Chaz, you would never imagine that he is 81 years old. Since retiring, as an engineer from Cessna Aircraft, over 10 years ago, Chaz has been staying busy. In addition to riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle, Chaz is a member of the Wichita Corvette Club, often going out to 81 Speedway to watch the races.…

Alexxis, After reading this summary, I think listening to this podcast would really benefit me! My grandmother that moved in with us about six months ago has Alzheimer's Disease. It's really challenging for her to keep up with her medications and we've found that recently she looks for every excuse to avoid going to the doctor even when she clearly knows she needs to. I think a big component of that is the fact that she recognizes she has trouble remembering things and it must be really discouraging for her. I think the point you made about having them write down main questions that need to be addressed would help her feel like she has some control and ensure she gets the answers she needs.…

After reading The Adult Learning Companion the two things that I have learned to be most valuable and effective for me going forward in my college career is time and studying. Time is important to me because, it can become challenging to find time to commit to doing school work after working 40 hours, taking kids to practice, going to sports game, cooking, cleaning and preparing for tomorrow’s work day. After all of this I just want to get in the bed to do it all again tomorrow therefore, time can definitely be a challenge. Going forwarded I will wake up an hour earlier to study before getting ready for work. The morning seems to be the best time for me to get some quiet and quality study time in plus I seem to be more focused.…

In my daily interactions with my future followers, I would like to have a face to face interaction, or something personal. I intend to have an ‘open door policy’ even though I may not have a true office, and I intend to make it a point to speak to everyone often. I’m not naive enough to believe that I will be able to have all personal face to face contact with my followers, and I know that there will be times when I will need to email, and call people on the phone, but hopefully those won 't be mass emails, and phone calls very often. I believe that a personal face to face contact, as close to daily as possible is a must when in a leadership position, I personally do not like when I am taking orders from a “faceless giant” an imposing…

Every Saturday, I distinctly recall the smell of pancakes, bacon, and eggs. The radio would be playing in the background, masked by the overwhelming chatter occurring throughout the house. So many things happening in such a small space: what I remember most, is the sound of laughter, and the smiles that surrounded me. My grandpa hollering because he cannot hear the television, my mother still drowsy from the sleepless night, My grandmother singing to the radio that was barely audible over the commotion, and me, invariably sat looking at all that surrounded me, enthralled at how lucky I was to have a heart so full.…
