At 13 everything was very black or white or yes or no; simpler times. Today, I can see how life is just organized chaos. Five years ago I was 18 and finally out to college on my own. At the time I thought I had everything together with what I wanted out of life and who I thought I was. As time pasted and I got more experiences in life, I saw that I was not as grown as I thought I was.…

I learned how to be independent and, I definitely matured. I started to do many things on my own because it was not all about me anymore. With doing things on my own I did not need my mother as much anymore because, I was in that stage where I thought I knew it all. A few years down the road my grandma had another daughter and I babysat her all the time, so I felt like her second mom, not her niece. With having a younger brother, and aunt, I tried to act like their second mom.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

The word independence can be defined in so many ways, but I will say independence is a situation or state where you are independent. This will lead me to say therefore that independent can be said to be free of outside influence, outside control, not depending on any authority or guidance from anyone, and also not depending on others for economic survival or livelihood. This document that is so much celebrated today is a legal document that proclaim to the whole world the numerous reasons why the thirteen (13) colonies decided to separate from the British Empire and be by themselves as a separate union (country). The thirteen colonists made this declaration for reasons other than to be independent alone, but also to let other nations know their…

Independant: free from outside control; not depending on another 's authority - not depending on another for livelihood or subsistence. In my life experience independance was always a desirable quality to strive for and also one that I would consider myself to possess. Parents praise their children for learning to be independent, teachers praise their students for thinking independently, and men generally find independence as being an attractive quality in women. This word has always had a positive connotation to me, so then being dependance, the word’s counterpart, must possess a negative connotation. You should not be too dependant on anyone during any stage in your life, relationships, schooling, or work.…

Getting off the plane, I felt like an adult for a moment. This defining moment of freedom and solitude made me realize I could go anywhere and do anything. When I arrived in my country, Uzbekistan, for my sister’s wedding, reconnecting to my past became more meaningful. Nostalgic memories were transitioning into new memories: climbing trees, picking fruits and playing jumpsies with my friends, until it got dark and I had to go home. Alternative Escape I have always been fascinated by music festivals. It amazes me how people with different ages, are eagerly passionate to attend to all types of festivals. It shocks me that at some time in history someone thought that people would enjoy this, citing the madness and frenzy of a feeling and the desire for it never to end. For me it’s precisely the thrill and excitement of having the experience of enjoying the music while connecting with others around me. My first experience with music was through my cell phone, I wanted to listen to something new.…

Where the child learns to make their own decisions and discover that their actions have consequences. I can say that based on the type of life I was living with my parents my sense of independence came at a very early age. Instead of me being nurtured to develop self-confidence and not have self-esteem issues, I would nurture my mother and try to lift her up during our difficult time. By that time, my mother had already given birth to my middle sister, things in my household appeared to be somewhat normal but, months passed and my father continued being abusive towards my mother. Nine months passed and my mother gave birth again to another little girl and even though I was happy to have another sister, I didn’t wish the life that I was living upon my worst enemy.…
