I met a 14-year-old mother, who will be graduating soon from junior high school. She delivered the baby, thus she is very young and inexperienced mother. She was not receiving any support because none of the family members were on the floor, and she was there by herself. The baby was delivered at home; as a result, the baby is taken to NICU at Coney Island Hospital for observation. My supervisor had told me to go with the mother to NICU, but based on my scope of practice I cannot touch the mother or the child. I did tell my supervisor that I would not be of any help because I am not licensed, but she told me that it will be okay. However, there was a conflict because NICU nurses had to reclarify whether I am allowed to be there because the rules of the hospital have changed. Before, the breastfeeding counselors were able to go to NICU to assist mothers, so the head nurse said she will determine if this will be allowed under the new policy. Overall, I had gained a lot of experience by interacting with the young mother. I persuaded the mother to breastfeed. Through trial and error, we latched on the baby, and she successfully breastfeed her infant. I provided her with my contact information and told her to please keep in touch with me if she needs any
