Personal Narrative: Improving My Live Speaking Skills

Improved Essays
Generally, I am a good communicator in and out of the class-room. Public speaking in front of a live audience is where I flourish. I think that speaking in front of a large live audience is the easiest because there is no need to worry about one person judging your performance. I can definitely improve my live speaking skills. Throughout the year I think that I can improve this skill by just giving speeches in front of the class. Also, practicing my speeches beforehand can also benefit me greatly as I can memorize the speech and speak well. I think my biggest weakness is looking down at my notecards too many times. I need to be able to memorize my speeches. My biggest strength is not getting anxious and moving around a lot. I tend to be very calm on stage and can hold proper posture very well. …show more content…
I think that group communication is very similar to speaking in front of a live audience. I have the same strengths and weaknesses in group communicating. I definitely need to memorize my speech still but I am even calmer in situations with groups. I tend to not stutter at all when presenting to a smaller group. I think that a small group is the easiest way to speak. When speaking in a group you can see who is paying attention and who is interested in what you are saying. My goal for this year is to memorize all my speeches for lab speeches. I think that I can get very good grades for my speeches if I actually know what I want to say before the day of my speech. To do this I will practice learning the speech everyday for a week in advance before the day of my speech. I will be more than ready for my presentations if I stick to this

To be honest I was never a good public speaker there are times I avoid public speaking there are certain fears I had such as tongue tied, forgetting my lines, the awkward silence when I try to make a joke or point and by being myself blurting out words like "stuff" or "shit" unconsciously. I know it's so unprofessional but it happened quite a few times. After speaking in public I kinda dwell on what I said something that bothered me or that was unsaid.…

One of the best things to help me, which happened to be this school year, was my effective speaking class. I went into the class with the I just need to get this over with attitude, but I had an excellent instructor that made me feel very comfortable. In the beginning, I went to class and would not even eat dinner because of how nervous I was for delivering a speech and by the end of the class I was fine I was not that nervous at all, I only had the healthy amount of nervousness that everyone needs to give a great speech. One other thing I have not mastered is asking for…

Dale Carnegie, a famed author, once said, “If you want to conquer fear, don't sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.” This applies to me in a massive way. Ever since I was little, I had been shy and nervous in front of people, people who centered their attention upon me while I spoke to them.…

The relationship I chose to analyze for my interpersonal communication paper was the relationship I had with my ex-girlfriend Laura. We met in high school through mutual friends and we dated throughout my junior and senior years. Communication problems and trust issues eventually were too big of a barrier to knock down and our relationship ended there. The main concepts I chose to analyze about my previous relationship were Personal Language, Nonverbal Communication, Proximity, the Social Penetration Theory, and lastly Relationship Threats. Personal Language shows your true self and is how you express your individuality and it is also more common in a private setting.…

You are in class one day when the teacher announces a new assignment: students are to research and give an informative speech about any topic of their choosing. As the student, imagine that you are terrified to not only present the speech in front of your entire class, but to have to go through the process of picking a topic, researching it, organizing your speech, and practicing it as well. At the beginning of my communication class, this was how I felt about producing and giving speeches. I was nervous to talk in front of the class because I have always been very shy and have suffered from extreme speech apprehension. I also dreaded picking a topic and organizing my speeches as well, since I could never make up my mind and I was never good…

I strongly dislike public speaking, but I am working to improve my skills in that area because I know how much it’s needed in the workplace. There were many of my classmates who are graduating at the same time as me and it seems like we all have a lot to improve. We need more practice and more willing to put what we have learned in the past into practice. I know that during our college careers, we have heard from different people about what we should do when we are giving a presentation, but it looks like we did not take it seriously and now we are facing the consequences of giving a presentation like a high school student and not as an almost professional…

I sometimes get nervous about what people are thinking about my speech when I am giving it but if I don’t judge people from the audience then I will have the mindset when I am on stage that people from the audience are not judging me. Lastly, I think that I will be able to get up in front of people and give a speech without getting extremely nervous. I haven’t had much experience with speaking in front of big groups but hopefully by the end of this semester I will be very good at it without having any nervous feelings if someone asked me to give a public…
