Personal Narrative: Immune Disorder

Decent Essays
I was four when my mom got the bad news. She noticed that my hair was falling out and she didn’t understand why. I barely had any hair at the time anyways, so for my mom, to see that it was coming out, worried her beyond anything else. She took me to my pediatrician who suggested that my mom take a trip to the University of Utah to see one of their leading Dermatologists. We waited for what seemed like forever before I was seen. The doctor pulled at my hair and a huge clump came out. He looked straight into my mom’s eyes and said, “Your daughter has Alopecia Areata. It’s an auto immune disorder and there is no cure for it.”

When I was 14 years old my father deployed to Kuwait with the military. I felt stressed, upset and worried all the time because my father, my best friend, was gone and knowing he wouldn’t be around made me physically sick. I would eat, and immediately after eating, I would start to have physical and medical problems.…

I decided to write about when I tried persuading my boyfriend to get a cat. We had lived together for over a year and I felt there was something missing. Our apartment complex did not allow dogs and that is all he wanted was a dog. He is actually allergic to cats, so you can imagine how difficult this was. At first I was always bringing it up and explaining to him that cats are easy to take care of, they love you unconditionally, and they are very entertaining.…

"You're testing me for...what?" I sat in the doctor's office just after my fourteenth birthday, as my mind raced with what my mystery ailment could be. Although there is almost no point in working anymore I still have to make a living for myself and the remaining members of my family. The sickness that I live with is one that some would find excessively appalling, making it impossible to talk about; so I kept it to a whisper. This sickness I thought was to embarrassing to talk about, making it impossible to seek help, left me feeling alone in the dark. This sickness ruined friendships, without me realizing it. This sickness that made getting out of bed a struggle for me.
