Personal Narrative: I Unplugged Myself From Technology

Decent Essays
During the two days I unplugged myself from technology was very interesting. I had already known I use my cellphone and internet more than other technology. I do love watching movies but on an average I only watch maybe once a week. I love playing video games but I have to be in the mood. I always find myself on my cellphone connecting to the internet to check the site very often at multiple hours of the day. Instead of wasting hours on the internet looking for new stories because I already read the updates. I fill my time with other proactive things such as exercising in the morning instead of checking for updates. And during school hours I read a book and save the updates for another time when I’m waiting in line or killing time in the car.

Many factors come into place when it's time to replace or upgrade one's computer. I have had three laptops over the duration of five years that needed replacement, and the one I currently use that needs to be replace. Prior to transitioning to the online setting I never really paid attention to the signs. Things had gotten so bad that my computer screen began to separate from my keyboard though still able to function. However, now I have to be a lot more cautious as a online student.…

Over the years, technology has advanced so much it has completely altered the way of life. You can research online in seconds versus going to a library and taking hours. Further into modern technology, a smartphone contains many apps; now you only have to grab your phone instead of taking a watch, calculator, a map and many other accessories. Today’s world sounds a lot easier, but generally speaking, the easy way has not always been the best way. Technology doesn’t allow us to retain enough information, can be a distraction, and is also unreliable.…

On Friday the 16th of October I went unplugged for 24 hours, and found it surprisingly uneventful. I had one minor slip up where I started looking at a phone because I was talking to a person who was getting the proper spelling for words off his phone. Other than that I did not notice a difference from my normal life. For the most part, I spend my time talking to people in person so that is what I did well unplugged. The biggest challenge was making sure I had my school work done before hand because everything has to be turned in online.…

I sit here, writing this essay, trying to avoid anything that will distract me. I succeed in some areas, I am away from my friends, and in a quiet place. One distraction that I can’t avoid is necessary in my everyday life, and it is how I will complete this assignment. I use technology constantly, and could not imagine my life without it. A Day of Unplugging from the Digital World I accepted the bold challenge of unplugging myself from the usage of any electronic devices over a time span of 24 hours during the last Saturday of April. Initially, I was hesitated to conduct the study as I have become progressively more reliant on technology for its great efficiency and convenience brought to my life. Therefore, I chose the option of 1992 in which telephone and cable TV still within the option of entertainment to increase my chance of completing the task. I further kept all my electronic devices out of my sight, including my smartphone, laptop, apple watch and so on for the purpose to recreate the settings back into the times of 1992. I work up on the morning of the contest with a great sense of insecurity and frustration a discontinuity of the rhythm flowed through my mind as I had no idea what to do next.…

After looking at how much I noticed quite a few patterns. This biggest and most noticeable pattern was the amount of time that I play Runescape. A lot of my spare time is taken up by that game, probably because its my favourite game to play. Another thing I noticed was how my technology usage on a weekend where I go home was lowered quite a bit because I had lots of other priorities to keep me busy and occupied. The data showed that I was a little bit homesick because of how much I played Farming Simulator.…

As I was going through my check list the first time I did just a brief, what I thought, we had for technology, as I sat in the bathroom, I realized how I had forgotten items, so I went through the list again. The numbers kept getting higher each time I went through the list. The biggest use was the lighting installed in the ceilings. Wow, I was amazed at the amount of mounted lights we have.…

Instead of being locked within the world of technology, I’d rather be free to experience the world around me. Technology gives us promises of granting us love and experiences while taking much of it away. I’d rather spend time with my friend or family. I’d rather spend the time learning. I’d rather spend the time loving.…

For the past 7 days I have been disconnecting myself from much of the internet. It’s not my first time doing it but it is the first time in over 7 years. It wasn't a total disconnection but I mainly used Twitter to stay informed but limited myself to only opening it a few times per day and used the rest of the internet for very specific queries like the lyrics to a song.…

I am barely doing any preparation before disconnecting because I think I can experience how much I am truly reliant on technology. I have asked my mom to wake me up for school so I don't have to use an alarm, I have asked my family to not turn on the radio and I have already done all of the digital projects i need the night before. I think the easiest part of this will be abstaining from television because I don’t think I watch too much television normally so I don't think this will be a big change.…

Growing up it was all about chalkboards and dry erase boards. You would have to listen to the screeching of the chalk as it hit the green tinted boards or smell the chemicals emanating from the dry erase markers. That is how elementary school and most of my middle school was. However, once I got to eighth grade things started changing. Projection boards were being installed and new software was being used like Publisher and PowerPoint.…
