Personal Narrative: I Need A Spiritual Home

Decent Essays
After spending awhile deciding where to go for our ministry work, Ben finally found us a place. It is the Interfaith Shelter in downtown Jackson. We picked this ministry after our first choice (Working at the retirement home across the street) fell through on us. Plus, we knew they needed some help that we could provided that help to them. I think the biggest spiritual lesson we pulled from our project, is that we are blessed to be able to have so much. We our blessed to have a roof over our heads, and to know where our meals are coming form each day.

In today’s society, people are swept up in the wrath of being too prideful, or become greedy. These deadly sins deaden our religious life, causing us to distance ourselves from God’s path. Everyone must dig deep into their spiritual lives, and lend a helping hand to those who need it the most. Whether it’s simply having a conversation with a homeless person, donating money, or volunteering at a daycare for the destitute children, these charitable acts can make a huge difference in someone’s life. My service learning experience was an eye opener for me, and it made me realize how privileged and blessed I truly am.…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

As someone who grew up in a safe city with a supportive, middle-class family, and enrolled in a public school system that offered an abundance of valuable classes taught by extremely qualified teachers, I was blinded to how others live. As I became old enough to understand that the majority of people in the world would never live like me, I wanted to do something to change that. I was taken aback by the conditions of the families I was to help on my mission trip just south of me in Tennessee. I was not in the same United States that I knew. But that wasn’t what shocked me the most.…

“How has your Christian spiritual journey influenced your professional and/or academic experience?” While I grew up in a God loving home, I did not grow up going to church every Sunday. Nevertheless, I have come to realize that it was through my faith in him and realizing that we all have a purpose on this Earth that has influenced by academic and professional experiences. Being the first person in my family to attend college and graduate with a degree, it was particularly difficult monetarily for my parents to send me to college; however, my parents knew that it was in God’s plan for me to pursue a postsecondary education.…

I am confident that almost all of us have had to go through a deceased relatives belongings at one time or another. You know what I’m talking about- after “Uncle Edward” dies an e-mail, phone call, or letter arrives with an itemized list of his belongings and you have been invited to choose what you want among the other relative's or close friends. To be honest, I find the experience awkward and strange. My belief is that even in families with stable dynamics, this scenario has the potential to stir up emotions, and no matter how well family members get along, there will be a level of envy and bitterness that cousin Ted, brother Tom, or sister Carol walked off with the antique armoire while leaving the tin can of nuts and bolts, a hack saw with a dull blade, or a favorite rock that Uncle Ed found on a hike years ago, for the rest of the family.…
