Personal Narrative: I Know My Role In A Football Team

Look through my eyes and see the restaurant dining room in dim lighting. Cheap, Asian decorations cover the wall behind my table. The trite smell of tempura filled the air of the oriental diner. The best advice I have ever received was given to me by a man I may never meet. In fact, this man probably did not even think twice before putting this phrase inside a fortune cookie. “Know your role.”, was written in black ink inside the post meal treat, a message I will never forget. Everyone has a different role. Some people, like myself, play a few. Just a few hours ago, my role was to brighten someone's day. The corny knock-knock joke you tell your friend in the hallway might do just that. Know your role. As high school flies by and my …show more content…
I was a scrawny kid, but I was still bigger and stronger than a lot of the competition. Unfortunately, when I got to high school I was one of the smaller players. I did not know what my role was. However, the team did not have a quarterback. I knew I could no longer compete with the bigger linemen, so I decided to give the new position a try. Although this was a relatively small event in my life, it paints a picture of who I am as a person, a team player. While my football career was short lived, I am currently gearing up for my fourth season of high school hockey. I am a team player, but I don't believe that is the only characteristic that defines me. I have watched many great teammates, and friends, step into new roles during my athletic career. Now I am watching freshmen, not much taller than five feet walk in the door behind me. I am more than excited to jump into my new role as a leader. I can only hope that the impact I make will be equal to that of my

Sometimes, in sports or in life in general, there are favorites and underdogs. There is a general consensus that the favorite team or player will win but sometimes it`s the underdog that wins and receives all the honor related with that win. This is very similar to what I read about Seabiscuit and what I watched in the video of Jason McElwain. Some people have the ability to transcend their underdog status (ie. Red from Seabiscuit and Jason) and create something very special.…

The majority of my lacrosse career depended upon my natural talent. With little work, I could coast and still outclass the majority of my teammates. That is, I could until I was pushed onto varsity as a sophomore. Instead of getting the steady playing time I expected, I was only permitted to enter the game when things got out out hand. Frustrated, I asked my father what I could do to earn a reliable spot on the field, and he told me that if I augmented talent with practice and outworked the rest of my teammates, there would be no reason for Coach to keep me off the field.…

My sunburn lines between my shorts and socks symbolized the restless, tiring hours spent out on the field. Every Tuesday and Thursday, for two and a half hours, the sun scorched my body while my legs would scrape into the ground. The cluster consisted of the seniors’ looming bodies that would go shoulder to shoulder against my own freshman self as our feet would battle for control. While this exhaustion enthralled and encouraged my game, the sprints, planks, runs, and more caused me to dread going to that grassy field every week. The humidity produced heavy, useless pants from my lungs as my throat would feel as if it was closing in from a claustrophobic nightmare.…
