Personal Narrative: I Introduced Into The World Of Music

About five years ago I was introduced into the world of music. At the age of 11, I had never touched a single instrument much less made a decent noise on one. My grandmother owned a Casio keyboard that was older than I was that just sat in the spare bedroom unused. Many times when we would stay with them, I would look at the keyboard and long to learn to play it. I had seen piano players before and the idea of being like one of them was my dream. In May of 2012, I acquired the Casio from my grandparents as they decided that it would be put to way better use in my possession than just sitting there collecting dust in the spare bedroom. Along with the keyboard I was given a beginner’s book to piano and from that day on I began teaching myself just about everything I know about music. The first couple of years were rough. Teaching yourself how to play an instrument such as the piano/keyboard on even a proficient level (which is where I am right now) is much more challenging than I ever thought possible. Of course, I said yes! Who could pass up an opportunity like that? During the first few months of being in that band, I learned what a chord was and how to use it. This little bit of knowledge opened up even more opportunities in music as I was now able to construct songs by simply knowing the chords! Knowing chords and their structures also helped me with band as I began to learn the theory behind it all. Transposing became easier, pitches got easier as I learned the difference between the sound of a fourth and the sound of a fifth. As I got even older, I began experimenting with different forms of glissandos and chord progressions in the church music.
