Personal Narrative: I Hate The Number Four

Decent Essays
I hate the number four. I hate its corners. I hate its presence. I hate 4:00, and I especially hate 4:44. I hate that I need to set aside hours in order to read a book when its pages tick to the dreaded four hundreds. I hate that I still have not watched season four of Scrubs. I hate working with the number four on math tests. I hate the feeling that I will die in a car crash if I allow four to exist peacefully. I hate how the number four makes me feel.
I love film. I love the swelling music as the characters realize their destiny. I love shaking off the popcorn bits that cling to my sweaters. I love the murmur of the air conditioner in the background. I love listening to the distinct guffaws and chortles of the audience. I love burrowing

I love the crispness of books that I buy in a bookstore. I love cracking open their spines and feeling them crinkle. I love the ancient books of a library. I love their frail and yellowing pages. I love that the dots of the I’s are fading and that the commas seem blotted. I love learning history, science, and stories through books. I love soaring away from my life and into the letters on the paper. I love escaping into books.
I hate bad smells. I hate how musty mold can cling to my hair for hours. I hate how smells can transfer and make everything horrible. I hate that initial realization, when my nostrils inhale and something unpleasant greets them. I hate panicking after I am forced to remain in the smell. I hate taking showers for an hour. I hate dwindling down soap bars as I grate them against the same patch of skin. I hate that my skin turns red. I hate how bad smells make me feel.
I love to exercise. I love wiping off a thick layer of sweat with the gritty white towel. I love how my arms tremble as I struggle with my last rep. I love hearing the booming lub dub of my heart. I love stretching my constricted muscles the next day, when the stiffness can finally subside for five seconds. I love to have this control over my body, even when I do not have this control over my mind. I love escaping into

I was surprised that the number for my subjective numeracy score was actually much higher and closer to the average than I would have predicted. I have always considered myself to be relatively poor with numbers so this definitely goes to show that I do need to think more of myself and my abilities when it comes to not only math, but anything regarding numbers. Also, it is a reminder to me that I am smarter than I may allow myself to recognize. This entire experiment confirms that how you perceive things are usually how they are, and based on what you think, that is going to affect how well that you do. This is an interesting life lesson to use going forward, not just with this, but…

I’ve been a movie lover all my life; that seems almost too obvious to mention since most kids in our day and age are. But the day I went from movie lover to absolute movie geek was in the sixth grade, when the local theater brought a huge set of old film cameras to our school for display. I wandered around those giant black boxes entranced, and when they set one up and projected the film against the wall, it was love at first sight for me. Since that day, I’ve always prided myself on my appreciation for well-made films. I drive my friends and family nuts, picking apart the lighting or angles in scenes, and I am known to make my opinions about a movie loud and clear.…

Picture it, me standing to the far left slightly behind this captivating camera aiming directly at its target. Lights fixed above the object like a dark cloud hovering over some pessimistic person. Headphones covering my ears muting the rest of the room out, and the voices project themselves as they rehearsed it. As time runs out, the words slowly roll off my tongue with accomplishment, “Cut!” I like words, a lot, and although to some it may just be well words, and figments of my imagination, I like moving pictures just as much.…

I have been a reader for as long as I can remember. I remember hiding under my covers with a flashlight just to finish a good book. Literature enthralls me, and by the power that the words have on one’s imagination and emotions. Literature captivates the potential to evoke one’s imagination and inspire creativity in anyone who starts to breathe in the precious words. Maya Angelou has the perfect quote to summarize how I feel about the power of literature and reading, “When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature.…

Was there ever a time you didn’t like to do something, but as you got older you started to love it more than you did as a child? When I was younger, I never liked to read, but now as I have gotten older, I read more and more different kinds of books and novels. My mother put my sister and me into a reading program in elementary school because our reading levels were lower than they should be. There were no criteria so we read books that were interesting to us, like the Given Tree by Shel Silverstein and Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White. When we finished reading them we would go around and talk about the book we read.…
