Personal Narrative: I Grow Up In Rockingham County

I grew up in Rockingham County which is a small, rural county located in northern central North Carolina. In terms of scenic beauty and outdoor excursions, Rockingham County has a lot to offer. However, there is an overall lack of tolerance for people and customs that exceed the norm. Rockingham County is in the Bible Belt and much of the population is religious. I believe religion is a positive source of peace and comfort that brings about benevolence. Unfortunately, I have also seen it used as a justification for discrimination and bigotry.
This environment significantly influenced my beliefs and my perspective on the world as a young child. As I matured into my own person, I realized the negative effects of closed mindedness and sought to become more tolerant of those with backgrounds different than my own. In my opinion, diversity and inclusion should be embraced. I have reached point in my life where I want to be surrounded by those who share the same values as me. I believe Appalachian State University, specifically the Watauga Residential College, will offer unique viewpoints that I was never exposed to in Rockingham County. …show more content…
I was able to grow up in a close-knit community and I had a true small town experience. As for my academics, Rockingham County High School has provided me with a sound education thus far. However, I also sought out opportunities that allowed me to advance my schooling. I have taken additional courses through the North Carolina Virtual Public School, the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and Rockingham Community College. Nevertheless, I still recognize that growing up in Rockingham county introduced me to the concept of culture and inspired me to pursue a higher education through outside opportunities.
