Personal Narrative: I Get My First Dog

Improved Essays
When I was 11, I slept in the parking lot of a Walmart a different state in order to get my first dog. In 2014 my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer. He has always wanted a dog, but growing up his parents never let him have one and it has always been an idea to get a dog, but he very rarely said anything about it. Although after he was diagnosed, my mom and dad decided to get a puppy. At first they did not tell my brother or I. After looking for a few weeks, they found a Norwegian Elkhound breeder from West Virginia that just happened to have 5 puppies available. So my mom called them a few days later.

It turns out that the breeder had a waiting list of over 120 people, so if we were put on the list, it would take a few years

We stopped at a PetSmart around Pittsburgh and got him a few new toys and treats. Then we went to Burger King and got lunch/dinner. The rest of the ride home was quiet and kind of boring.

When we arrived back home, my grandparents and a few neighbors were there waiting to meet the new addition to our family, NeChee. He was shy at first, although eventually we warmed up a little and went an seen everyone. The rest of the day, we showed the dog around the house and took him for walks around the property. I was very excited to watch the puppy grow up and just have a dog in general.

This experience is so important to me because it was the first and last vacation I had with my dad. About a year after we got NeChee my dad passed away and NeChee was not the same dog. He became very territorial and protective. There were only a few people that we could trust him around and because of this, we had to put him down June 6, 2017. I loved that dog more than anything because after my dad passed, he became my dog. We did everything together and he was constantly with me. So to have him be there constantly, to not being there at all really hurt me a lot. In August, my mom got another dog named Maverick. I love him, but he will never even come close to

After the puppies are born, they are taken away from their mothers and sold to stores by the 4th or 8th week of their lives. Many die due to the fact that most are taken before they are weaned. This also confuses the puppies, and many end up dying because they do not know how to perform simple tasks such as eating. This results in starvation and death for many puppies before they are able to reach adoption age. Also, the dogs begin to develop fear behaviors and lack of socialization skills with humans and other animals.…

This particular breed was a border collie and was incredibly intelligent, loyal, and friendly. She was a bit hyper but to a little girl of ten, was the source of entertainment for many years. Plus, she sparked a desire in me to become a life-long family dog owner. When we moved out to New Mexico in 2004 she came with me and my mom, which must 've really been hard for both of them since we were driving from florida. While my dad was still working in Florida and trying to sell the house he would video chat with her and she’d bark and wine. Around 2006 she had a bad hip and was half blind and deaf but still such a great dog.…
