Personal Narrative: I Am Selena Yuan

Hello, I am Selena Yuan. My birth name is Xiaoya Yuan. Since it is hard for most people to pronounce my name, my parents changed it to Selena. Therefore, Selena is my English name. I have a family of four people: my parents, my younger brother who is nine years old and me. We have a dog, his name is Milky, 11 months old, the breed is Samoyed. My family and I came from China. We immigrated to the US one and half years ago. Back in China, we lived in Beijing. We left China in the middle of my eighth grade year. I came to the Bay Area with my family. I started studying in La Entrada Middle School for the second half of my eighth grade. Like other La Entrada kids, I came to Menlo Atherton High School starting from my 9th grade year. Beijing, one of the oldest city in China, it owns most my memories. I still remember those winters in Beijing; it was freezing. I was holding a hot sweet potato, walking home after school. It felt really cozy. My favorite days are those cold mornings in Beijing. The alleys were always full of people trying to sell their homemade hot breakfasts, they got very loud when some customers try to make them lower the prices down. After school, I used to hang out with my friends. We would go to a really old alley called “Nanluoguxiang” to get traditional Chinese snacks. Sometimes, we would go to an art gallery called “798”, not because we love art, but because 798 was big and quiet; me and my friends can talk about our secrets in that place. I have so many great memories about Beijing, I like those very crowded subways, those really loud markets; they are all parts of old Beijing. One of my most important object is my pillow pet Little Turtle. My dad gave him to me in spring, 2008. I have a really great relationship with him. I used to talk to Little Turtle when I was small, but I haven't talked to him recently. Maybe because I am a high schooler already. Little Turtle was my brother’s for a few months during 2010. I lend him to my brother because my brother was trying to sleep alone in his own bedroom. After that, I got Little Turtle back. I always bring my Little Turtle when I am traveling or going to a camp, he

When I think about the boy who I was growing up, the young adult I am today, and the man I plan to be in the forthcoming years, one aspect of my life stands out to me far more radiantly than anything else: my culture, my skin, my identity as a Bangladeshi-American. There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…
