Personal Narrative: I Am Returning To School

Improved Essays
I am returning to school after a twenty year leave. When I was last in school, I was Child Development major. The only course I took at that time was a remedial “Math for College Students” that was a review of elementary school math- i.e. addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, positive and negative numbers, area, volume, fractions, percentages, simple solving for x… I have not gone beyond those most basic concepts since high school- nearly thirty years ago. In junior high and high school, I took pre-algebra and algebra repeatedly, and only ever eeked through- my highest grade being a C-. I have a fair level of math anxiety. Basic math isn’t an issue- but the moment I am tasked with memorization of facts or form or formulas...there are tears.

I consider the calculator and computer programs, like Excel, designed to do the heavy lifting for me a personal gift from God. I have worked with money and billing and the keeping of accounts for most of my professional adult life- having worked as a cashier, front desk auditor, child care center director, and (most recently) a credit union teller. I am an intelligent person and understand the basic principles involved, and take care in my calculations...but before

All due respect, I have been dreading this class for some time and will be in a tremendous hurry to push through and put it behind me once again. I do not aspire to become a mathematical genius by any means. It will be nice to have a refresher on some areas I have grown fuzzy on- as the pretest showed me some more weak areas than I recalled. The goal of my college education is ultimately to launch a career in Human Resources, and there are common programs utilized in the field for payroll, benefits and such. The sooner I get my homework done ,take that final exam and pass this course- the sooner I will be on to the next step in achieving that

It all started in 7th grade when I struggled with fractions. The following year, I was put in “Bridge to Algebra”, which was a class for those who wasn’t ready for Algebra I, but also understands some Algebra. I passed the class so I was able to enroll in Algebra I for my freshman year. I was excited to move on to Algebra I, but I realized that everyone else in my school class was enrolled in Geometry and I was behind.…

Even being an American has it’s problems. Especially coming from a Hispanic background. I was born in South Carolina, when I was five years old barely starting Kindergarten, my parents decided a big change for my brothers and I. We moved to Mexico, we lived there for about three years I started school there, so I never really had the chance on learning English. After I started going to school in Mexico, my parents decided to come back to South Carolina. That’s when everything was confusing, I didn’t speak any English which was very terrifying to me.…

Throughout my entire school career, I have been frustrated at my math classes, but it wasn’t that they were going too fast; it was that they were going too slow. Every opportunity to move ahead I was given, I used. When I was given the chance to move up from Algebra II to pre-calculus, I studied for hours every day up until the day of the test came. “Beep! Beep!…

Students who do not establish a solid foundation in mathematical concepts often carry these conceptual deficiencies into middle and high school (Nelson, 2014). Little (2009) noted that deficiencies in mathematical concepts usually emerge in elementary school “and continue as students’ progress through secondary school, typically performing over two grade levels behind their peers” (p. 3). Little attributed this phenomenon to poor mathematical instruction that covers too wide a scope of skills and concepts, causing the students to be unable “to achieve a sufficient conceptual understanding of the core concepts that underlie operations and algorithms” (p.3). Conceptual understanding is necessary for problem solving, and students are unable to be academically successful in mathematics without these…

During when I was in middle school I had to make many choices on what I was doing. Some choices that I’ve made during my middle school days were not good. Going back to college, even though I have a bachelor degree, was the most important decision I took since I have moved to America. Three years ago, I started my studies in Union County College which is located on Cranford, New Jersey. On my graduation May 25th of this year, I realized that I had not only received an associated degree, but I have also received an opportunity to have a hopeful future. Returning to college was a personal challenge and an important tool to start a successful career in America.…

I put off returning to school because of this very topic - time management. Bethel offers several ways to help with this issue, I particularly like the online calendar as a way to keep assignments and discussion deadlines front and center. I was traveling out of state for the entire Unit 1 cycle; it was a daunting task making sure I was back at the hotel in time to devote time to my studies as well as my work obligations. So, remaining focused on keeping professional and personal worlds separate and manageable is the bane I (like my other classmates) share and must remain cognizant of.…

This letter is intended to help me figure out what skills I have learned in this class, and what skills I was lacking and had already obtained coming into this class. This is my first year in college, but I had many of my teachers in high school that prepared me for the rigorous calculus course. I took calculus AB my senior year of high school, so I had all of the skills I needed prior to entering this class. I knew the Limit, Derivative, and Anti-Derivative topics, and in depth.…

My childhood memories regarding learning mathematics has been for the most part positive from 6th grade onwards. From 1st grade to 5th grade I was not conscientious so at times math tests produced anxiety but math was, at the same time, easier and simpler back then. I recall being the fastest person to state the multiplication tables in 4th grade. During 6th to 8th grade, although I was not necessarily the smartest, I landed at the top of the class in advance math since I was very hard working. However in 9th grade I recalled a horrific incident.…

One cannot escape things like counting, adding, and subtracting, no matter where you go. These are absolutely necessary skills for children to learn at the earliest possible age. However there are many students today who do not like math at all.…

This disruption in the working memory can occur when students develop anxiety for math, which then in turn affects their competence; which can gravely affect their ability to further study and understand math concepts. But where does this anxiety come from? How do we aid in removing such anxiety in our school systems? These are both questions that I will be discussing throughout this…
