“So, what are you thinking of majoring in college? You’re going to be a doctor right?” These are the words that come out of the mouths of every family member I talk to. My response is the same every time they ask: “No. I want to go into business.” Ever since I was a child, my desired occupation has gone from being a teacher, to being a fashion designer, to being an interior designer, and to now wanting to be an accountant. Dreams change. They don’t understand me when I tell them this. They all say it makes no money—that I could do better. Become a doctor they tell me. I can’t.
The day this happened was just like every other day. I woke up, went to school, went to work, went home, and procrastinated. It was a slow day at work that day. I expected

Nobody knew what happened to him, not even one person. From the symptoms, I predicted a ruptured brain aneurysm. Earlier that day, my uncle complained of a headache. The headache got to a point where he couldn’t stand it anymore, so he went to the hospital. At the hospital, he was just given headache medication and sent home. Later that day, he went to go pick up his youngest daughter, Halyne, from school, as his oldest daughter, Ashley, walked home from school. When they all arrived home, they sat down to eat something together. After eating, my uncle took his medication. Then, he and Halyne went to their room and Ashley went to shower. As my uncle played with his daughter, it started to happen. Suddenly, he was not able to breathe anymore. He told Halyne to tell Ashley to call an ambulance. Slowly, blood began to drip out of his body. It was a subarachnoid hemorrhage, which led to him having a stroke. By the time the emergency vehicles arrived, it was already too late. My uncle died while playing with his six-year-old …show more content…
On May 5th, they did not only lose their father, but they lost their mother along with him. The day my uncle passed away, my aunt did not shed one tear. I thought it was just her trying to stay strong for her children, but months later I was proven wrong when she abandoned them. She left for Vietnam without them. Yes she was taking his ashes to his homeland, but she could have taken her children with her. A week or so after the funeral, they all left their house and moved in with Tata’s family. They left everything behind and I guess my aunt left more behind than I thought. Things only got worse when she came back from Vietnam. She moved out and really abandoned them. Now, Tata’s parents are fighting to become their official

“Well, one, you’re African-American” are the words so carefully chosen by my high school theology teacher in describing why I should get into college. Not because of my intellect or my drive, but because of what I have no control over and more often than not, the future of my success would be determined by those judgements. As a young black girl, the product of a single-mother and financial instability, statistics show that the odds are against me, that my future will be the pinnacle of economic depravity and dependence. That will not be my future and only those with such shortsightedness are not able to see the passion and drive I possess, that I refuse to become another statistic.…

Sometimes the reaction to both my parents being gone are either pity, positive or negative ones. Facing the dramatic event, I went through this year caused me to hide my emotions from society. Some believed that I needed help and attention and others that I would be a lost child because I didn’t have any parent to keep me in check. These were the judgments that hurt me the most because I felt like they were disregarding my grandmother and all that she did to raise me. I didn’t want society to dissect my familial structure and feel pity for me.…

While it is uncomfortable to acknowledge that some of us have an unearned advantage in life thanks to things that we have no control over; such as gender, race, skin color, sexual orientation, accent and even wealth, it is important to discuss to better ourselves. As much as we, as individuals can continue to acknowledge and recognize our privilege it is practically impossible to discard or refrain from benefiting from the advantageous perks of the privileges. 0However, as we are able to see this invisible advantage many deny we can use our privilege to help and speak out and against the societal constructs. Lucky for me I have American, middle-class, straight and most of the time, white privilege. When I have a conversation with someone, with…

My racial and ethnic identity has strongly impacted my academic development. Throughout my growth, I was constantly reminded by my parents and family that not only am I a girl but that I am also Hispanic. My dad mostly reminded me that because of my gender and my ethnicity, I would have to work harder for my dreams. I grew up understanding the stereotypes set for Hispanics in society, and from a very young age I told myself that I will never allow people to group me into that stereotype. The knowledge that people were expecting me to fail, only led me to work harder in not only my academic setting but also in every aspect of my life.…

I never really thought too much about racism when growing up. Maybe that is due to my upbringing. I was raised in a small diverse country town where, for the most part, everyone got along. Not to say that there was no racism; it just was not seen very often. Some would call me lucky to have been so naïve in my microcosm.…

I grew up in a Caribbean, conservative, Christian, ‘no nonsense’ household, where being Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender (LGBT) was not only frowned upon, but unthinkable. This led to my intolerable attitude towards members of the LGBT community growing up, and a great deal of hateful speech during my years in middle school and part of high school. This changed when a friend in high school told me he was gay. I was shocked, and truthfully, I did not know what to do. At first, I did what was natural to me, which was to ignore him, but I realized that this was the wrong attitude and not Christ-like.…

I was supposed to leave during 5th period to go on the bus for Track and Field prelims, but instead went straight home after school ended. The race was at a late time towards the evening. I thought that I didn't need to go on the bus, because there was so much time I had before my race even started. Plus anyways, my 5th period was a computer class which I was behind on a few of the assignments, so I certainly didn't want to leave that class early. When I got home, I told my dad to drive me later to the school where prelims was held.…

When I was younger I always had dreams of becoming a Chef or going into the culinary arts. When I asked my mom and dad what I had talked about doing with my life, they both told me about all the time I would spend in the kitchen with them making things from Pb&J to baked Haddock and Crème Brule. Today I find it amusing that my perspective on my future career has so drastically changed from a cook to a lawyer. Just the other day I was interviewing my parents on the topic of this Career project. I decided to ask them what they thought would be a suitable career for me before I told them.…

Like Mother, Like Daughter I am sitting on a wet bench. Its warmth grows this sensation within me as if everything will be okay. How is this possible?
