Personal Narrative: I Am Jose Luis Ortiz-Vega

Improved Essays
I’m Jose Luis Ortiz-Vega and I was born and raised in San Jose, California. My parents on the other hand were born in Mexico. My mom was born in Guadalajara and my dad in Tonala. They both came over to the United States at a young age because they wanted to find what they call the “American Dream.” Soon they had six kids which I was one of them. From the start I never really liked school at all. I mean from what I can recall, I would always hide in the slide at PreSchool and tried to stay hidden until my mom came to finally pick me up. That changed when I entered Elementary school and opened up a little to my other classmates. I would actually play and be friends with them and never stray away. There were rough times in my life that I found hard to adjust to. I was not as smart as the others kids in my class. How I knew this was because I would always be taken away by a teacher of some sort and she would help me with reading, writing, and all that other stuff. The teacher would always ask me a series of question like “How you feeling?” and “What subjects are you doing bad at?.” This course went on until I graduated from elementary school and they finally stopped. Middle school was also a tough time for me because I fell into a bad habit of not doing my homework and constantly getting bad grades. …show more content…
I see this time as like my downfall and the reason behind why I was doing this was because of the friends that I had back then. The friends I had weren’t the smartest around or the nicest ones at all so that influenced me throughout middle school. These friends were really rude and dumb, but I stuck with them because I didn’t have anyone else to hang around or be with since I was so shy. At times, they would lie, cheat, and criticize others to get what they wanted which is something that I let influenced me. I soon recognized what they were doing and ended up not being there friends by the end of eighth grade. The most important thing that I can remember from middle school was how I opened up in a new way. During middle school was when my dad got prostate cancer. It didn’t really affected me as much that I thought it would, but that was a different story with my family. They were all sad and crying saying that my dad wasn't going to get better anytime soon. This was different for me because I believed with all my heart that my dad was going to make it out alive. It was because my dad is a pretty strong man and I knew that he would pull this through. In the end my dad succeeded and triumphantly made it through and got rid of all the cancer that was in his body. Which made me happy to see that believing can be an amazing thing. Another thing that shaped me into who I was today was my sexual orientation. There was a girl named Jocelyn and we were friends for a couple of years, it wasn't until middle school where she asked me to be her boyfriend and I accepted it, but as the relationship went on I found myself to not be entirely happy with the relationship. There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…

I know many people. Some of them are amazing at a sport in which I only possess mediocre skills in, others are able to maintain their high standard GPA's, while others keep their commendable reputations of perfectness. So, I know many meritable people, and then there is me, and for a girl who has failed so many times in her life ( tests, sports, a vain attempt at artistic skills) it becomes a little delusive to continue to believe that one day I will "triumph." That one day I will "get my time to shine. " You eventually grow accustomed to always hearing "no", receiving the letter that reads "we are sorry to inform you that..." or simply having another door shut right into your face, and after a while, per say my sixteen years of life in…
