Personal Narrative: I Am In North Carolina I

Decent Essays
What’s wrong with me? I'm sure we've all asked ourselves this question. I know in North Carolina i was bullied for being gay and i remember at one point i wanted to change who i was completely. Eventually i realized that there's nothing wrong with me, it's just that i let others control my thoughts and feelings rather that just being me. We let others opinions on us control the way we act, speak, or even how we act towards others. When we let others determine how we are, we are giving them control and letting there say become our word. I don't want there word to be mine, i want the world to hear my own worlds.

Florida is a land of sun palm trees and sand. Florida being a southern state with sweet tea, Publix, and Disney just a few hours away, had many perks. I had never thought of what it might be like to grow up in a northern area, or just even outside of Florida. Up until my 14th summer I had always assumed everyone lived the same way I did. It had all started when I got accepted to a summer program in Washington D.C to attend a medical forum.…

For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…

The thing about running is that you hate it until it’s over, at least for me that’s true. Personally, I like running, and it gives me a chance to get out and work towards something. All throughout high school, I’ve run track, and for two years I ran cross-country, both are great sports. The two years I ran cross-country made me wish I ran all four years. If you’re part of more than one sport, it’s natural to choose a favorite.…

I consider my hometown to be Grand Forks, North Dakota. I was born at the former United Hospital in Grand Forks in 1994, and have lived here for my entire life—with the exception of about a year spent in Walhalla, North Dakota, due to the flood of 1997. The schools that I attended while growing up are all within fifteen minutes of driving from my current house. My parents live just 6.2 miles away from me. Although Grand Forks is my city of birth, it wasn’t until I started college that I really considered it my hometown.…

My whole life I have struggled with answering the question “where are you from?” As a little girl I was always tongue-tied. I didn’t know my family’s history, I never had the ability to establish myself in one place because my father’s job required constant adjustments to my surroundings. However, my sophomore year I took my first college level American History course and it began opening doors I didn’t know existed. I soon realized that I may not know exactly where I come from, I may not belong to a specific state or region, but I am a part of the big picture –The United States of America.…

There isn’t anything more breathtaking than going Up North. If you’re not from Michigan you might be wondering, “Where up north?” In Michigan we use “up north” as a term for the upper half of the mitten, I’d say from the top of the thumb up. The UP (Upper Peninsula) can be considered Up North but normally it's just the UP.…

I'm moving to South Carolina to be closer to my mom. My son Charlie loves the thought of moving because we finally will be out of the country and next to neighbors. The neighbor to the left is very inviting, maybe too inviting. She came over and brought us a pie and offered us to come over for dinner, but I made up some excuse to not have to go. I'm not a very friendly person.…

It was 11:45 pm, we had the car packed, the moving truck loaded and on its way, and all of our goodbyes said to our family and friends, and set out to our new home in Georgia. It took us about 13-14 hours, but we finally arrived at 1:23 pm having driven the entire night, exhausted but still eager to see what is in Georgia. When we stepped out of the car for the first time, we were welcomed by a brisk December afternoon with a light breeze, something completely different from the sweltering heat of the south that we were told about. After adjusting ourselves from sitting for so long, we went and started trying to get everything settled. Once everything was settled, we started our first day of school.…

Last Summer, after 4th of July, I went back to my home state, which was North Carolina. I went down there to spend some time with my Grandparents because I haven't seen them in so long. It was so hot down there I didn't have many things to do. I told my friend who I haven't seen in so long, that I was in North Carolina. He asked me if I wanted to come spend a whole day, and spend time with him, so I said yes.…

The Barbie house along with all of its occupants was the hardest to give away. Since Barbie dolls were difficult to get in Russia, my father would send me some from the United States. As my mom prepared for her trip to the States to undergo chemotherapy treatments, I reluctantly relinquished my most prized possessions. Assuming that the cure was just around the corner and to shelter me from the battle, it was decided that I would move to the Republic of Georgia to live with my aunt. While the year’s I spent in Georgia during my mom’s illness and after her passing were filled with hardships, my subsequent life in the United States and, ultimately, all of the opportunities that I have been given by the many individuals involved in my upbringing, solidifies in me a strong belief that adversity is surmountable.…

406 miles is a long way to travel, especially when the trip is unwanted. When my mother told me she had signed me up for Blue Ridge Leaders’ School in Asheville, North Carolina, I was the least bit thrilled. I protested and whined, cried and screamed, begged and pleaded for my parents to allow me to stay home and skip the week long trip. Much to my dismay, my parents slid my bag into the luggage compartment of the charter bus and shoved me into the aisleway of the capacious bus. Afterward, both of my parents stood on the sidewalk of the Tuckahoe Family YMCA and waved goodbye as I departed on a journey that would change how I saw myself and the world forever.…
