Personal Narrative: I Am Immigrant

Decent Essays
What comes to mind when you hear the word “Immigrant”? Do you think of people who are living in the shadows? People who are working for less than minimum wage on the fields in scorching heat just to provide for their families? Maybe you think of people who are “stealing” jobs, who don’t belong in the United States. Whatever your opinion may be, one undeniable fact is that immigrants are here in the United States. I am one of them, and I am here to stay.
I was born in Guanajuato, Mexico. My parents had me when they were both around the age of 17. As they struggled to provide for me, my father came to the United States when I was about two and a half. My mother quickly followed when I was three. I stayed with my grandmother for about a year.

Introduction: Cuban Immigration To The United States Most people hear the word “immigrant” and think “illegal.” This is an unfortunate connotation that doesn’t take into account the millions of immigrants who are here in the United States legally. By using the word “immigrant” as a negative phrase, we deny the importance of immigrants to our society. The U.S is a nation of immigrants, and while we do not need to have open borders, we also need to recognize the importance of our American identity.…

Being an immigrant and having arrived at the United States when I was already a teenager, I consider myself to be a disadvantage applicant. My parent came here, like many other immigrants, to work hard in order to give me the opportunity to have a better future. They did everything on their hands so that I could focus on my studies, but the money never seemed to be enough. Thanks to the assistance that the government gave us with food stamps we were able to buy food, however, health care was not as available to us. My parents did not have money to pay for health insurance, and even though my mom is a diabetic, once they took the Medicaid away she was not able to continue her treatment.…

Being an immigrant is a title, but I view it more as a story, my story. On my way to America I’m reciting , “Dil Dil Pakistan Jaan Jaan Pakistan”, in my mind. The doors of the subway closed before our eyes, separating us. It was only my mother and I. My father and my three-year-old sister were now on the train without us. It was our second day in Canada, without a word of English, or even a dollar in her pocket, my mother decided we had no option but to sit and wait where we were, hoping my father would come back for us quickly. I recognize this moment as the epiphany of the struggle of many new immigrants, just the first of many obstacles to be faced living a life diaspora, wherein the notion of home would be unclear.…
