Personal Narrative: I Am Honduran

Decent Essays
I am Honduran. No, I am not Mexican; nor am I a criminal. I am different, and a leader- and I might even be said to be a hard worker, ambitious, and humble. I am invisible. I am ostracized because my image is not to the ideal standards of what's, "pretty" or, "cool." People take a look at me and think I'm not good enough so they don't even give me a chance to show who I am. Being a female is never easy, people look at me and think I'm weak, I need help, or I don't know how to play sports-they judge me before they know what I'm capable of; and when they see strength and potential, they're astounded. People continue to fall in the trap, but not me. I continue to remind myself that everybody's opinion does not matter and to remember

Although people assume otherwise, I am Latina, and I'm proud to be a part of that community. I obtain my Latin blood from my father, who moved to the United States from Uruguay as a child. My parents divorced each other when I was young; however, when I was with him for either the weekend or the month of July, I embraced all the wonders of my Latin family. Latino culture entails prodigious amounts of cooking, and we always cooked Uruguayan food; it was almost taboo to eat out. From flan to the glorious empanadas, my family always ate homemade meals.…

It is said that experiences make who we are, but I also think that experiences lead us to take and discover roads which probably we would have never considered pursuing if we hadn't had those experiences---this is my case. Born and raise in Panama---The Bridge and heart of the Americas--- I had the opportunity or fate to live through some interesting historical episodes: On December 20th, 1989, I was thirteen years old when I woke up to a surprising discovery that Panama has been invaded, or liberated from Noriega. I did not quite understand what this meant. The only thing I remember is seeing U.S. military soldiers in the front yard of my home, carrying weapons and directing my family and me to go inside our home, and the fear and confusion…

Who am I? I regularly take a moment to understand who I am and who I yearn to become. I am first defined by Anglos as an uneducated female.
