Even though I applied for financial aid I was denied. I came to learn that the federal formula was weighted not only by income but also by assets. So my parent’s small nest egg, a modest home with sundry repairs to come and a mortgage to be paid every month for the next ten years, counted against me. I’d attend classes during the early morning hours, late afternoons, evenings and weekends as long as it didn’t interfere with my work hours. When breaks came around, while some of my friends were off on vacation or volunteering in faraway countries, I worked extra hours.…

Ever since I was a child I wanted to help people and didn’t realize how, until I stepped foot in my 7th grade science class. The day still replays in my mind like it was yesterday. I was walking into a new school, with new people, and I felt like the last leaf stuck on the tree, waiting to fall in place where I belonged, but oddly enough, this one basic anatomy and physiology class made me feel welcomed. What made me feel welcomed wasn’t really the teacher or the students in there, but the environment of that particular branch of science. What was so amazing about that side of science was there was always more to learn and more importantly you were learning about yourself.…

To begin with, I’m having to focus all of my efforts on school in order to maintain my GPA. Consequently, I can’t work this semester to help ease some of that load off of my parent’s and my shoulders like I did last year. Additionally, last year I wasn’t able to be involved in as many clubs as I wanted to, due to my job. As a result of not working this year, I’m actually able to participate in all of the clubs that I want to, which will look good on veterinary or medical school applications.…

My parents make an average amount of money, but over the past year, the cost of college became a reality to me and my family. Each semester the total cost for my schooling is $8,284.00, since I am currently receiving help from the U.S. Military, they pay for roughly $3,599.00 of my schooling cost, and I thank them so much for their help, but my parents are left with a total of $4,487.00 to pay on their own and it has become a strain on them. I have a younger sister who is in high school who loves playing sports and recently she has come up with the idea of trying to join a volleyball league, which means more money. As the daughter of a single mom from a large family in an upcoming community, I have learned much about hard work and the opportunities I have been given because of the people who have came before me. Everyday, I watch my mother work endlessly and strive to give me more than her parents ever could for her. Although my mom will be able to support me emotionally in my journey through college, there is a lot of physical support that I will need to create on my own. Many of my peers have advantages set up for them ahead of time, while I have only a year of minimum wage work under my belt. It’s going to be difficult to find a way to pay off my education, but I know in the long run that it will benefit me.…
