Personal Narrative: I Am A Syrian Refugee Student

Decent Essays
I am a student in Canada. I think of myself as one of the luckiest kids in the world. I have the right to an education which no one can take away from me. I was shocked to know that a 16 year old Syrian refugee boy was held in solitary confinement in immigration detention for 3 months. The country that I am so proud to be born in and a part of suddenly didn’t feel so great. My thoughts about Canada have always been positive and I have always had tremendous respect for this great nation. Learning about the treatment of refugee children has made me have second thoughts on my view of my country. I could never imagine being treated the way these kids have. Some of those children have been detained without their parents. I could not imagine the

These people come for many different reasons such as escaping poverty, visiting or coming to live with family. Although most refugees have legitimate reasons, there are still many who come for reasons such as escaping justice or running away from their own mistakes. Canada’s weak immigration laws, the ruling in Singh’s court case and limited response of the Canadian government, make the country a more attractive destination for potentially dangerous refugees. All of these aspects limit the extent to which we are able to control who enters our territory and the degree to which we are able to protect our sovereignty. (Collacott, 2010)…

Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

I've always loved different cultures and tried to surround myself in as many as possible however I could. This was usually me trying to learn on my own from the internet, music and movies, but I was still missing that X factor that really made me indulge in other cultures. As soon as I walked onto Swarthmore's campus I felt that X factor. Sitting in the info session and taking the tour, I truly felt at home. The small diverse campus allows for people of completely different backgrounds and cultures to have real relationships that they might not have even noticed anywhere else in the world.…

My graduate experience will be light years different then my undergraduate training. I chuckle just contemplating the technological difference alone. Back when I attended undergraduate school there wasn’t the internet, the LoudCloud, e-books, or personal laptop computers. We thought we were “hot stuff” because we progressed from the slide ruler to a state of the art Texas Interment graphing calculator. By the way google informed me that my particular calculator at that time was the first of its kind.…

Going through small private schools in a little town since I was in kindergarten has set me up for very few cultural experiences but my parents never wanted my siblings and I to grow up like this. When my family goes on vacation my mom always tries to fully submerge us in the culture around us. For example, a few years ago, my family and I went on a vacation in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. We stayed in a nice resort and it was never necessary to leave the property if you didn’t want to. Most people never did.…

It was a tedious night in the office with a profusion of paperwork, and waiting around for for felonious acts to be committed. So as, just to alleviate the monotony in the small room. I remember the how the ring of the incoming call suffused its way throughout the room until all eyes found the source of it. I couldn’t wait to see what vermin we got to clean off of the streets today, for our moral citizens’ sake. I hoped it wouldn’t be a false plea or a call from an official.…
