My mother was born and raised overseas and with just a sister in the house, had limited exposure to living with high energy, grimy, sweat soaked boys. That being said, she has gotten a full education in this area and could write a "how to" book on the subject now. She learned enough to know that her boys need to move the energy out of their bodies if she wanted to keep the house intact. When I started high school my parents had a few mandates. Focus on the big picture so you stay on track, study hard so your options aren't taken from you at the finish line and pick an extracurricular activity or sport to balance the scales. While the 541,000 marathon finishers within the US all come from different backgrounds and have distinct differences, they are frighteningly similar in many aspects of their lives. Take for instance the level of training and determination each marathon runner has. Six out of the seven days every week for at least a couple months, they spend their days in the gym and out on the trails. One must build a body of muscle in order to complete the lengthy race – as is demonstrated by the father-son duo of Ken and Will Satre. Don’t let Ken Satre’s age or small stature fool you; he is a machine.…

I Corinthians 9:24 states, “Do you not know that those who run a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you obtain it”. I’m starting over again anew something different now. The last run was great while it lasted. Day one back at practice was pretty rough, hitting balls endlessly at the range brought upon old bad habits. It made me realize how far away I was from my former swing, the consistency, strength, and concentration it had brought me. I had now found myself with a rugged backswing and an upbeat tempo.…

About a year ago at this time, I was training for the NYC half marathon. I’d never really taken to running in my life, despite always being pretty active. This was different. Nearly a year later, I still vividly remember sitting slumped in a green chair of the hospital lobby still in disbelief as I traced the curve of my spine with my fingertips. That was my breaking point. I had no will to contain my emotions as I had so well for the last miserable eight months. I am not too proud to admit that sitting there alone, engulfed in that green chair with my feet dangling above the floor, I burst into tears. I went in with high expectations, maybe unrealistically high.…

Running has a lot of ups and down for me. Along with most of our teammates, I will groan when our coach says it’s Dawson workout day, one of the harder practices. Cross country isn’t always easy. Running is hard, it takes an immense amount of strength to cross any finish line. Quite like a road race, there will always be a mad dash from the starting line. Just because two runners sprint out to the front doesn’t mean you should run up there with them. There are many runners who are new to pacing themselves and they will go out and continue hard, only to crash and burn a mile later. You need be smart about you race.…
