Improved Essays
I am a childhood cancer survivor. At five and half years old I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, and my entire life was derailed from the path it was on. I was removed from my school to endure chemotherapy, repeated kindergarten, and felt like an outsider at only the age of five. I was in remission within six weeks, and have been in remission for thirteen years now with minimal side effects. After everything that I endured cancer changed everything for me my academics, extracurriculars, and even my outlook on life. I started school as part of the Class of 2016, and the youngest in my class leaving me at a disadvantage. I was Straight A student for many years, received academic awards from fifth to my senior year of high school, and managed to receive a tuition coverage scholarship from Northern Arizona University. School was not a just a place of academics for myself though, it was a place for me to enjoy and experience what I loved and was passionate about. Since I was ten I found my passion of theatre getting on stage and portraying a character, and making the audience feel something. I was apart of the Ahwatukee Children’s theatre since 2009 participating in Wizard of Oz, Roger’s & Hammerstein's Cinderella, Treble Maker & Select Show Choir, Olivia, and even 13. A.C.T was a great start into my love for the theatre arts, and a way for me to find my place. In my sophomore I was casted in my high school’s production of Night of the Living Dead as Helen, and from there I fell in love the production side and straight theatre, and for the rest of my high school career was spent as the props chief

I have chosen Cancer as my favorite constellation because it is the sign I was born under. Latin for "crab", it is the dimmest of all the zodiac constellations and used to be the Sun's most northerly position in the sky. It is located in between Gemini (to its west) and Leo(to its east). It is best known among stargazers as home of Praesepe, an open cluster. Cancer is most well known in Greek mythology as the crab sent by the goddess Hera to help the hydra kill Heracles.…

For my final revision project, I decided to revise my fist essay “The Visible Cancer”. The reason I chose to edit this essay was the special connection that I had to it. When writing this essay, I was very invested in telling the audience how I had felt and describing what had happened with my dad’s cancer as best as I could. In making these revisions I thought it would be a good way to look back on how I viewed the situation when I first wrote this right after it happened compared to how I feel about it now after several months.…

The most challenging leadership role I have undertaken is being President of the Sutherland Cancer Awareness Club. This is my first year as President and the Club has created a goal of raising $2,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. I think this is achievable but will require a large amount of effort from each of the club's 55 members. The main difficulty is two-way communication with some members, particularly the younger students who are new to responsibility and don't always fulfil their commitments. I try to be a patient mentor and highlight the importance of persistent and consistent effort in achieving our goal.…

Junior year I started a part time job on top of theatre to buy a new camera. In elementary school I saw the tech booth at a Sunday service and it looked quite interesting. In middle school I began working tech for my church changing lights, switching slides. I eventually became the A/V team leader for grace kids and even trained the rising students. I devoted what would seem like crazy amounts of time to the activities not because I was crazy but because I’m passionate.…

But I think the defining moment when I decided to pursue this professionally was when I was in high school and I went to see a George F. Walker play, Problem Child starring Ted Dykstra and Kristen Thomson in Toronto. It was so good. The audience was howling the whole time, and at the end of the play Kristen delivered a beautiful monologue that made me cry and I thought, "What a whirlwind experience we've all shared here. This is beautiful and I'm going to do that."…

I realize this is short notice, but I was wondering if I could possibly have a short extension on the Paper 2 assignment. Just prior to Spring Recess, my 12-year-old brother was diagnosed with a form of Acute Leukemia as well as a serious form of Staph infection in his blood brought on by his compromised immune system. Due to these circumstances, I have spent the majority of the past two weeks in the hospital with him, as well as getting affairs in order for my Mother and Father, and have not been able to focus on school. Additionally, I was just diagnosed with strep throat this morning and could not return to school until mid-day today. Due to the tardiness of this request, I realize that you may not read it in time or just cannot grant me…

Almost every month when I was little, I would have a different dream job. One month, I wanted to be a professional cheerleader and the next I wished to be a veterinarian. Once I started getting a little older, my dream jobs started to become more clear to me and I realized what I actually do want to be doing for the rest of my life, and that is helping to make a difference in other’s lives. Being a Pediatric Oncology Nurse has been my dream since I was in seventh grade, when my family and I were watching my grandfather suffer from lung cancer and I was wishing that there was something that I could do to help people just like him. I knew that the first step to accomplishing this goal was to get my CNA license, which I completed this past summer…

While completing most of my clinical hours this semester in women’s health, I have had the opportunity to meet several women and have them share their own personal stories and experiences with me. One particular patient that comes to mind, is a 27-year-old woman that is expecting her first child that has a severe form of hydrocephalus. When I introduced myself, she was very pleasant, but I could sense stress, worry and sadness. I absolutely couldn’t fault her for being emotional as I would be the same way. As my preceptor was talking to her, she started to open up about her pregnancy, and the endless worrying she experiences on a daily basis regarding the future of her child.…
