Personal Narrative: Howland High School

Friday, May 31, 2017, was the final day of school. Warren, Ohio, USA is where I attended Howland High School. The last school bell of the day rang, joy and excitement rushed throughout my body. I was as excited as a firecracker as I thought about the adventures I could have over the summer. I was impatient as time crept by. I do not like to go to school, but I have to. Lunchtime in the cafeteria was the highlight of the day as we were given ice cream bars and other delicious snacks that the kitchen needed to be rid of. The last period of the day was with Mr. Williams “English one” class and had felt like the longest fifty minutes of my life. Other times when time stood still include getting my braces put on, getting my driving permit, and waiting in the airport. Since I do not like school, I …show more content…
Staring at the frozen clock, as time stood still, did not help, neither did tapping my sharpened pencil on the desktop. I had looked at the clock 2,000 times. Teacher, “May I please go to my locker?” Mr. Williams assigned the class to help stack books and wipe off germ infested desks in the classroom. I grew impatient. “Teacher, will you please let me go to my locker?” Somehow, I felt violated as I believed that the last day of school should be lazy and carefree. When the bell finally rang everyone rushed out of the doors like a stampede of bulls and you could just smell the freedom. Everyone headed off in different directions laughing and talking as they carried their belongings. I had gotten my binders, papers, and pencils packed. Paper and other insignificant items floated to the floor while nobody seemed to notice. My favorite pencil rolled across the hall. Peter, “Could you please hand me my pencil?” Quickly, he handed it to me. As we enter the hallways excitement was in the air as they are more crowded than usual, the crowd was a wall. All the students in the hall were excited for it to be summer break after the long school

By the time I got back up there the bell was going to ring and I would go down and eat lunch. The bell rang and we all rushed downstairs and sat down. After lunch my headache was gone so I didn’t go back to the office. I had E.L.A. for an hour, then I went to study hall for the rest of the day. When school got out at 3:25, Ava, my friend, came up to me and said “Mia, do you have any homework because if you don’t, you should come to my house.”…

His eyes brushed down a list of names quickly and came to a sudden halt. With a glance toward me, he called me to the front of the room to present my work from the day before. And then it wasn't just him and me, it was him and me and every other sharp-faced person in the room. They were experienced "AP students," the best of the best, I was a mere peasant in their presence. Reluctantly, I made my way to the front of the room and with an unsure hand slid my work under the projector screen.…

We watched intensely, making thoughtful faces, when the teacher looked at us scornfully and discussed what we could and should have done when she turned her back. We watched the clock, knowing we would present, but we still had that thin sliver of hope that the ring of the bell would deliver us. Our names were called. We advanced to the front of the class, feeling slightly more confident now, getting ready to admire the result of our hard work and time. It was strange, seeing our hours and days of organisation be summed up in a handful of minutes.…
