Personal Narrative: How Volleyball Changed My Life

Improved Essays
The past four years of my life have been full of positive and negative experiences that have changed the person I am and the life that I am trying to build for myself. The most significant experience in my life has been my involvement in volleyball. The sport of volleyball alone, to me, is a stress reliever. When stripped of the unfortunate politics of competitive high school sports and the undeniable drama between a team, it is a wonderful way for me to spend my time and have fun. However, the majority of my time playing volleyball in high school was terrible. It is difficult for me to express in words how I felt in practice every day or in my car on the way home after a league match. Every day in practice I would constantly ponder what the time was, or wish that I had the …show more content…
In the five years that I have been involved in the sport, I have only experienced degradation from this one particular coach who seemed to find pleasure in mentally abusing his players and humiliating them. Until recently, I had always convinced myself that I was useless and a waste if I wasn’t a division one commit. I constantly had to hold back my emotions and restrain myself from breaking down in front of the team or my coach because I felt so humiliated and demeaned. There were times when I built up just enough courage to stand up for my feelings, however I was immediately shot down and I went back to doubting myself and my worth. Every day was challenging in the fact that I gave one hundred percent of my effort into the volleyball program to receive this type of treatment. I was respected by all of my teammates and I was recognized as the hardest worker, the best teammate, and the most competitive in our team evaluations. I was named captain and I was a great leader that held large amounts of responsibility. Unfortunately, my coach rarely chose to see me as the type of player I actually

In the past four years, I have had many experiences with family, friends and an extreme amount of clubs, activities, and home life occasions I am involved in. I have been a part of many teams in my lifetime and played several abstract sports, but at Summit Academy High School the sports are very unique. There are mixed attitudes towards the teams, players and coaches that you would not see at any other school. But I like to call them obstacles and challenges.…

I’ve been playing baseball ever since I could pick up a bat. Since then, I’ve been to countless practices and played in hundreds of games. Baseball is essentially a second life, and if you were to step into my room, for example, you’d see a childhood baseball bat leaning against my nightstand, several baseballs on my dresser and scattered on the floor, and a picture of Wrigley Field displayed on my wall. I spent most of my summer travelling across the Southeast playing in tournaments in Atlanta, Charleston, and Raleigh, where I was able to experience playing against very talented players in front of several college coaches. These tournaments have given me some of the greatest experiences of my life, and really reflect just why and how much I love baseball.…

All throughout one’s life, you must encounter obstacles, face adversity head on, and keep your head high all the while. Thankfully, as a child, I wasn’t always alone in completing tasks or accomplishing things. My friends, family, and people around me in life were quite often to help me, but there were times that I had to accomplish things on my own. As I grew up, I began to hate asking people for help, and I wanted to try things for myself. I felt like it was cheating to ask for help, because in life after high school, aren’t you usually having to do things by yourself?…

In high school, it can seem like the most important thing in life. I, fortunately, was involved in many other activities to fill up my time. I could not play volleyball my sophomore or junior year. This really upset me because I love the sport. While sitting on the side lines, I had a decision to make: sit here bitterly and wish I could be playing, feeling sorry for myself, or cheer my team on and try to be a positive impact on them.…

The roar of the engine sends my heart racing as I pull out on to the track, one lap around and we are off, trucks at my side as we glide around the turns. The slick dirt pulling my back end around I move my hands, my automatic controls, the only thing keeping me from spinning out. It’s funny really because clichés aren’t my thing, however, at times idioms are just the thing to describe a situation or time period in one’s life, for instance the saying that “life is a roller coaster” couldn’t be more fitting for my life. The ups and downs, the highs and the lows, the twists and turns, life is just one big adrenaline rush and at times I feel I’m a junking, addicted to life.…

“Runners on your mark…Set...Poww!” Those were the last sounds I heard during what could have been my last race of my sophomore year in collegiate Track and Field. It was a frisky, yet cool Saturday in April and after a strong performance in the previous indoor and outdoor season (4x100m and 400m), I was determined to continue and uphold my strong form on this day. There is a saying that things do not always turn out the way we hope, but I believe, there is always a positive lesson to be learned from every life event. I love sports.…
