Personal Narrative: How To Hold A Baby

Improved Essays
Before my niece Eira was born, I had no experience in being around babies. If one of my cousins offered for me to hold their baby, I usually would decline their offer. I had no idea how to hold a baby, change their clothes, or change a diaper. I didn’t have a lot of patience when being around younger children either. I never thought of having children when I get older, and I did not really want to have children. I did not hate kids, but I never really loved them either. My mom was extremely excited to have her first grandchild, and my dad joked he was too young to be a grandpa even though he is 52 years old. My sister’s pregnancy was the first time I actually got excited about a baby being born. She did not tell others about her pregnancy until months later. My sister was planning to keep the gender of the baby a surprise, but it was the first thing she saw in one of her ultrasounds. Then she decided it was going to be a secret until the baby was born. I hoped for her to have a girl.

There was a small crowd of family members waiting to hold her. (oxymoron) The nurses had tied a small pink bow in the very few hairs she had on her head. She was as small as a doll. (simile) I remember holding her and sitting in a rocking chair at the hospital. She made little grunting sounds, which her voice was not big enough to support. Looking at her in my arms made my heart melt. (hyperbole) Eira’s skin was softer than a brand new blanket. I may be biased, but I believe she is the cutest baby I have ever seen. She had a lot of hair on her head for a newborn baby, and she had brown eyes. Everything was great; except for the food we ate at the hospital because it was cold and tasted like

Throughout my mother's pregnancy, many people asked me do you want it to be a boy or a girl, or ‘what do you think it going to be’. At first the answer was simple, a girl obviously! I had already had two brothers, and I wanted to experience having a girl as a sibling.…

In my opinion, giving birth had always seemed frightening, long and most of all painful. My First Time Babysitting It was a dark rainy Friday evening, school just let out for the weekend and I was free except I still had one thing to do left, as I was doing a weird walk jog across the campus while trying not to get soaked just to get to the main building, as my phone started to make this weird ringing noise and obviously I got a bunch of looks. When I looked at my phone I saw that my dad was calling me and when I answered my dad told me not to walk home in the rain and just wait it out. Once I got to the main high school building, I walked through the maze of hallways and lockers, and finally just finally I made it to the front of the building. It was still pouring down rain when I looked out of the window, by this time the storm was almost through…

To say that my brothers, cousin and I were surprised about Mum’s unexpected pregnancy would be a very large understatement. This happened somewhere around August 2011 and caught the four of us (Will, James, Anthony and I) off-guard because we all thought that James would be the youngest in the family. Naturally, this came with a couple of thoughts of joy, such as my grandparents from my dad’s side would now have a granddaughter for the first time, Mum and Dad, who were ecstatic about the idea of having a daughter to shower as much attention as possible onto and us four boys now having a larger role of responsibility to fill since we’d be looking after her too. There were also some thoughts of doubt that came to mind, such as having older brothers…
