Personal Narrative: How To Drive

Improved Essays
I’ve been driving for almost a year now and I feel like I could say I’m an okay driver. I mean I’ve had some close calls but I wouldn’t say they were unusually crazy. That wasn’t the case the first time I drove because I literally had no idea how to drive a car whatsoever. Before I got my license, my sister would always talk about letting me drive. One day we pulled up to a parking lot and she told me I was going to drive back to her house. I had never driven before and I didn’t realize a lot of stuff that’s pretty obvious. It started in the parking lot, she told me to put it in drive and I didn’t realize you had to hold the brake so the car kept moving forward and I already was getting scared for my life as I inched toward the other cars

On a beautiful clear morning of February the 19th, my mom picked me up from my class at the University of West Georgia, then we went to Waffle House to have a nice breakfast. We left from Waffle House, proceeding down Maple Street, and turned onto South Street and immediately onto Kenner Street. We then turned onto on the merging lane on South Park Street (US Hwy 27) heading south, we immediately halted to a full stop as vehicles moved from the middle lane into the merging lane in front of us, but at that time there were no vehicles behind us. As we waited to enter traffic, a car suddenly struck us from behind which caused the car to jerk violently forward, causing my mother’s chest to hit the steering wheel, and our heads and bodies to whip forward and then back.…

Officially, starting from that day, my life was filled with elation and happiness. I never want to forget the time I started reading Maximum Ride. Starting off my day, I woke up from bed, gulped down some chow, and went back to sitting on my more than comfortable bed, reading the book of my future dreams: “Maximum Ride.” It was necessary to read this book, for a competition, called, Battle of the Books. Continuing on, the deeper I read into the book, the more hooked into the book I was.…

As a child, I remember my grandma reading me The Little Engine that Could every time I visited her house. Which may seem slightly odd that, that’s what I enjoyed as a kid. I drove my first BMW when I was 20 years old; my boss at the time let me drive his E39 530i home. It was the most amazing thing I had ever drove and decided right then I must have a BMW once I made enough money to afford one. It was fast (to me), handled like it was on rails, quiet, comfortable, and everything a person who loves to drive could really ask for at the time; truly a “the ultimate driving…

The thought of getting behind the wheel seemed like far too much responsibility. While waiting for my mom to drive me anywhere was a somewhat aggravating loss of freedom, I felt I needed more time before I went back to piloting heavy machinery. I felt obligated to act almost as I had when I was first getting my license- I even spent awhile only driving with one of my parents in the passenger seat. At first, I was screaming internally from the moment I put the key in the ignition to the moment I parked it at my destination. Changing lanes made me very anxious, I saw all cars as threats (actually I still do), and unprotected left hand turns came close to actually frightening me.…

The turns, curves and large dips in the road were not taken as well as they should have been, but my sister was patient in her, much apricated, “backseat” driving. Everything felt too fast coming, especially the turns. I was constantly reminded to either slow down which always led into “you still have to keep your foot on the accelerator”. My speedy turns have mellowed out considerably but now I seem to receive the later advise continuously.…

I first realized I was in foreign territory when I witnessed my boss take a drag of a marijuana joint, take a shot of whiskey and walk out of the bar with a girl he had just met at our show. Suddenly, I was thrust into a world I had never experienced before. I was merely a boy surrounded by middle-aged men, who were seasoned veterans in the field of musical touring. The closest person to myself in age was 10 years my elder. I had not known the hardships I would soon be witnessing while out on the road.…

Being part of the generation who grew up watching Fast and the Furious films has always made me want to drive a car. At that time I knew I still had a while before I could drive, but any chance I got to be in the driver seat I would. My first time I ever got behind the wheel was right after I watch the fast and the furious in 2001. It was during the summer, my mom was washing her car and according to her “I accidently locked myself inside and somehow I managed to turn the car on and started backing up the car.” My mom was so scared she started yelling “put the car on park” “put the car on park” but I had no clue what she meant.…
