From a young age, I had questioned my sexuality, but was too afraid to accept that I was gay and I never thought I would accept that part of me. The open-minded atmosphere that theater provided, allowed me to feel comfortable in new situations. The place where I caked on layers of makeup to transform into another person ironically became the place where I was myself. This confidence that had forced me to become a better actress and accept myself translated into other aspects of my life. In the classroom I used to hid in the back, hoping the teacher wouldn’t notice me and force me into answering a question. However, this year, in my history class, I became more involved when my group was assigned to do a project on HIV/AIDs. In charge of how awareness became a part of society during this time, I was able to use my love of theater. On my part of the slideshow, I included photos from RENT, a musical about a group of starving artists who struggle with this disease, and even a movie clip. I used my love of theater to raise awareness of a situation that changed lives, in a way that was more interesting than reading an article. I wasn’t scared that people were going to judge me for liking theater or this particular show, I was happy to voice my knowledge and my opinion on the situation and many
