Personal Narrative: How Theater Changed My Life

Excitement. That was my immediate reaction when I was cast in the winter musical. Theater had always been a secret passion of mine but until this year I had never auditioned, or even acted at all. I knew I wanted to perform on stage, and with the help of theater classes in school, the director had given me a chance to prove that I belonged there. Growing up, I had always seen sports as my “thing” and never even knew theater existed or how much it would change my life. Finally, after hours of rehearsing in front of my friends and the mirror, I was ready to take on this challenge. Although I played a minor character in the show, the role demanded a lot more than expected. The specific show, being a farce, required that the majority of the …show more content…
From a young age, I had questioned my sexuality, but was too afraid to accept that I was gay and I never thought I would accept that part of me. The open-minded atmosphere that theater provided, allowed me to feel comfortable in new situations. The place where I caked on layers of makeup to transform into another person ironically became the place where I was myself. This confidence that had forced me to become a better actress and accept myself translated into other aspects of my life. In the classroom I used to hid in the back, hoping the teacher wouldn’t notice me and force me into answering a question. However, this year, in my history class, I became more involved when my group was assigned to do a project on HIV/AIDs. In charge of how awareness became a part of society during this time, I was able to use my love of theater. On my part of the slideshow, I included photos from RENT, a musical about a group of starving artists who struggle with this disease, and even a movie clip. I used my love of theater to raise awareness of a situation that changed lives, in a way that was more interesting than reading an article. I wasn’t scared that people were going to judge me for liking theater or this particular show, I was happy to voice my knowledge and my opinion on the situation and many

In acting one I feel like I learned why more than what I intended. I think what most people and I would have thought is that acting is learning about how to play other people. But what we all can learn is that acting is way more then that. Acting is knowing that you can be anything in this whole entire universe even if this universe sees you as a nobody. I feel like everyday in this class I have a little bit more about myself.…

To be a leader, one must first earn the trust and respect of one’s peers and become someone that they would listen to. As a petite, easily distracted female, I often have trouble becoming a person that others listen to outside of the classroom. Thus, becoming this leader and being elected and inducted as the president of the York Suburban Trojan Theatre Club is my most impressive achievement in leadership. At first, people did not know who I was, so I was able to build a reputation for myself by becoming the props crew lead in all but official title. Still, when backstage, I have a reputation as a leader.…

In 2012 I arrive at a place called First Stage at 3:30 in a room filled with over 150 kids. I have to check in at a desk and a lady takes my picture and then gives me 2 forms to fill out. I give them to my mom as I am too jittery to write or even think. I’m auditioning for a play called To The Promised Land, and I’ve fallen in love with it’s script. At this moment there is nothing more that I want them to be cast as the main character named Ruth.…

The first Broadway musical I enjoyed was Disney's Beauty and the Beast. I was about thirteen years old. It was more elaborate than the small performances at Disney World. There was more music, elaborate set designs, and more seats in theater. I was very impressed by the singing and actors ability to flow through the material.…

My experience in the Mary Poppins cast has been probably one of the best things to happen to me so far in my life. At my old school in 10th grade I was in theatre, then the following year I was bullied out, and I desperately missed theatre. It was my life, I enjoy it so much and it is such a part of me. So coming here and deciding to audition on just the second day of school was a really big deal for me. I was absolutely terrified to, but I stuck through and did it anyways, and I am so happy that I did.…

It’s very strange how one experience or choice you make in your life can change the rest of your life that follows that event, would you then in turn change these decisions you made. Such as your what if your mom conceived you not on the knowing basis. What if everyone was telling her not to because she was to be a single mom and that’s not a world a child should be born into, but then what if she challenged this belief that she grew up with. This then in turn affected all her choices later in life, but then vice versa what if she didn't challenge this belief and stuck with what she knew. This may be of the more extreme choices in life that some people must make but we all have that certain time in our life that comes where we must break away and make…

I once was young boy with big dreams; I wanted be be a “star” and be on the big screen. How great would it be having hundreds of people yelling your name and taking your picture? All I ever wanted was to help, inspire, and encourage others; having people wanting to be you and being moved by your actions and person. My real start to acting came a little later than I hoped, it wasn't until 2010 when I realized I really wanted to act, I remember the day so clearly; I was downstairs doing some of my “grade 6 school work” when my mom called me upstairs to show me an ad in the paper for munchkin auditions for The Wizard of Oz at Theatre Ancaster.…

Even when sharing a smile in context and locking eyes with another actor during a performance, it not only represents a moment in the show, but it morphs into a beautiful and colorful reality for the audience. It is the show that lifts the audience from their closed cocoon and lets them bloom. Now if I told this to anyone who was not invested in the dramatic arts or any form of art, they would probably think I was crazy. But being crazy about theatre, screen acting, and musical theatre is what drives me to love acting and singing, share my talents, and lead others to love the actor inside of them. Quite honestly, I take pride in this craziness and cannot imagine my life without my involvement in acting and theatre.…
