Personal Narrative: How Softball Changed My Life

Back in 2014, my sophomore year in high school, was when I first started playing softball. I never thought a sport was going to make a huge impact in my life. I’ve always had a huge passion for sports, but sadly I didn’t join any sports until I got to high school. Not to brag, but I was a good athlete and still am. The very first time I stepped on a softball field, it was love at first sight. I didn't really know what to expect since it was my first time playing softball. I was one of those shy girls that kept everything to themselves and never socialized with anyone. At first, I was embarrassed by joining the softball team because I thought the girls from the team were going to criticize me. I still remember the very first thing we did in practice, which was playing catch with a partner. I was amazed at myself because I literally went from not knowing anything to knowing something. Scrimmages and games started approaching and I felt confident about myself playing. I played any outfield position and I was really good too. I started realizing that we never won a single game we would always lose. Some of the girls on my team would say, “Why even try if we’re already losing.” Once they said that they won’t even try and it affected every player. My coaches Debbie and Marcos couldn’t make any comments or suggestions of how we were playing because they would contradict what they would say. The girls on my team would say, “They’re being mean to us let’s just give up and lose like always.” I stepped up to the plate and talked to my coaches about the situation. Our mission was to at least win a few games as a team, but none of them really cared. My coaches stepped into the situation and gave a speech to my team members.
