Personal Narrative: How Popular Music Changed My Life

Decent Essays
As I hear many people say for themselves, I also have a variety of music tastes. By this I mean that there are many songs I enjoy that come from a variety of genres, but they are usually considered mainstream. Songs I enjoy can come from American pop, hip hop, country, K-pop, punk, classical, and many other genres.
My musical journey began with my family. My parents are Chinese who grew up in Vietnam, so I was exposed to Vietnamese children songs from CDs my mom brought from Vietnam and 80s Cantonese pop music my dad played in the car. Listening to this music really gave me away to connect with my family, because we don't have much in common besides our ethnic background. I grew out of almost all types of Children's songs, but I still like to listen to my dad's songs while carpooling with him.

To analyze, I just wanted to fit in by listening to whatever music the kids at my school were listening to, and I also wanted to listen to what my cousin, who I looked up to as a kid, was listening to. It was a combination of typical Disney movie and pop songs everybody at school listened to with my cousin's choice of teen pop songs during the early 2000s. I have a playlist I play while driving that is dedicated to this period of my life, and it's my playlist of choice most of the time. Half of the songs come from Disney movies such as High School Musical, Cheetah Girls, and Camp Rock. The other half, influenced by my cousin, includes early 2000s hits: Maroon 5's "She Will Be Loved," "Me and You" by Cassie, and "We Belong Together" by Mariah

The first risk I ever took was the one that completely changed my life. My middle school band directors were discussing marching band. I asked when the meeting was, and so I went. I didn't know a single thing about marching band or what it even entailed. I joined on a whim because my friends were doing it, and I wanted something to do that summer.…

Have you ever stopped caring so much that whatever happens, happens? I remember the time I had gotten in trouble by my mom because I had walked home from school. It was a gloomy day from it being so cloudy and cold. I was talked into walking home during school by friends whom, at the time didn't care about school as much as I did, cared nothing of school. I didn’t like it, but then again I started not to care either.…

Disappointed, disbelief and fear filled my mind as I sat there between the shattered windshield and my steering wheel. I couldn’t stop thinking about what just happened, what did I just do, and did this really just happen to me? My lungs began to tighten up as I began to cry out of fear. Knowing that my parents were back in Arizona and I was there all alone with no family.…

It’s very strange how one experience or choice you make in your life can change the rest of your life that follows that event, would you then in turn change these decisions you made. Such as your what if your mom conceived you not on the knowing basis. What if everyone was telling her not to because she was to be a single mom and that’s not a world a child should be born into, but then what if she challenged this belief that she grew up with. This then in turn affected all her choices later in life, but then vice versa what if she didn't challenge this belief and stuck with what she knew. This may be of the more extreme choices in life that some people must make but we all have that certain time in our life that comes where we must break away and make…

Behind the curly hair, the spontaneous laugh, and the vivid imagination, something sparked a fire in my soul. Throughout my life I have felt so lost, like a pier soul trying to find something to attach itself to. I consequently tried to find my purpose in this world and find a passion that was worth embracing, but nonetheless I would fail. It was not until my freshman year of high school, when I finally got that indescribable feeling. I had found what to attach myself too, I had found myself within the music.…

Why I Sing Chaeley Winkler I cannot remember a time when I wasn’t singing. Of course, I know there was time before I could speak or burble as infants do, so there must have existed a certain silence before sound, however the mere thought of being so silent—unable to reach out with voice or touch—disturbs me to no end. But these thoughts of a time before sound hadn’t quite crossed my mind until I began to question the finer, tinier oddities in my life. These questions emerged at around the age of seven, before they had manifested as inner thoughts.…

Concerts have always been a way for the general public to experience their favorite artists and musicians perform right in front of them. I myself have been to several concerts, all of which have been rap and hip hop concerts. So going to an orchestral concert was going to be a very different experience to me. I know that there wasn’t going to be any mosh pits or excessive screaming of fans throwing themselves onto the performers. With all that in mind, I was mentally preparing myself for a very different experience, and honestly, I was more than ecstatic to go than I should have been.…

Music has been an essential part and larger than expected role in my life since elementary school. It has given me many opportunities I could have never even dreamt of and has given me the ability to impact the lives of others. I continued playing throughout middle school and now attend Cleveland School of the Arts, where I have been able to perform countless times and have had classes from professional musicians. Personal Music History When thinking about my earliest musical memory, two specific memories continue to play through my head. I can remind when I was very young, around two or three, when my mom would sing “you are my sunshine”. She sang this to me almost every morning and night and because of this has become a song that reminds me of her and being young and carefree. I can also remember being about 5 years old at the family cottage watching Disney Sing Alongs on VHS. I begged and begged my mom to sing and dance in front of the television every day.…

People and music are inseparable as Macdonald (2008, 39) argues that ‘We are all musical. Every human being has a biological, social and cultural guarantee of musicianship.’ It is hardly possible to live without hearing music in daily life, and people has been building musical identity since they are born by negotiating through it. Thus, music is a significant matter in personal identity and analysis of one’s life can reveal one’s musical identity. This essay will demonstrate the analysis of my musical identity based on my life.…
