For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…
Mom was small, a slight 110 pounds but through my eyes, she was large, even after my height surpassed hers. To this day, she would argue that she weighed only 100. Her strong presence claimed her space, and anyone else's that she cared to. Being right was of utmost importance to her, and she made sure always to have the last word. Overbearing, and overprotective of me, her only child, she usually controlled every situation, regardless of how trivial.…
Yesterday in clinical I was on the labor and delivery unit. As everyone know, mom and baby is not my preference. For me, the problem is not caring for mom or even seeing a delivery, it is caring for the tiny baby. I wanted to be on the labor and delivery side because I hoped to see a delivery. There was one delivery on the unit, but unfortunately the mom was not receptive to having a student in the room.…
I was born in San Francisco to a single mother, and I have never known anything different. My mother provided an incredible life for me, for which I am eternally grateful. At the age of eleven my mother decided it would be financially best to relocate to Casper, Wyoming, where she would have the help of her family to raise me. Although the move was extremely difficult for both of seeing that we created friendships and bonds with people that we would no longer see as often, my mother has never made a decision she didn’t think was best for both of us. My mother always puts my well-being first which has given me my love of helping others.…
It was January 4, 1997, during a terrible snowstorm that I decided it was time to start my life. My mother was forced to carry me for ten months, during which the doctors told her that she and I had not gained enough weight. The day my mother’s labor was induced she weighed 115 pounds. When I was born I was twenty-one and a half inches long and weighed only five pounds and fourteen ounces.…
Everyone knows the YMCA song, but everyone doesn’t have the same connection to it that I do. This building never contained one life changing event for me, but it has been a pivotal place in my life. A place I’ve referred to as home many times, the YMCA has shaped who I am as a man. This pivotal spot is where I suffered my first traumatic injury, changing how I do things for the rest of my life; but also was the place I went to when coping with family incidents. This institution, in particular the basketball gym, helped me find myself, changing my life forever.…
With my heart about to beat out of my chest, I make my way down the long narrow hallway that takes me to the courtroom where my family is waiting . I remember seeing all of the yellow caution wet signs scattered down the hall, letting people know that they had just finished mopping the smooth white floors. As I stand in front of the tall wooden doors that separate me from the court room, I cant help but wonder what all could go wrong. Does my step dad really want to adopt me? Will the judge grant the adoption?…
It was a Saturday morning March 17, 1996 I was eight months in my mother’s tummy and my due date was in mid April. Uncle Benito had the crazy idea of going to the snow all because my mother had never seen the snow. My mother told me of a hill she sled down from, a great slope that didn’t leave her feeling to good “No me siento muy bien.” My uncle rushed her to Granada Hills Hospital on the morning of March 19, 1996; I was born seven pounds at eight minutes until eight.…
"You will remain in foster care until the age of 18 or until your mother can give up drugs." Those are the words that made me realize that my life had taken a change for the worse. I was nine years old when my siblings and I were placed into foster care. We had been to three different homes in the course of four days and somehow I knew this would be the deciding factor that would differentiate me from "normal ' kids with "normal" lives.…
*CRASH* *BANG* *SHRIEK* That's how it sounds when you babysit two three year-old demons. You can never be sure whether or not the screams are of joy or pain. Babysitting can be entertaining as well as completely terrifying. I absolutely treasure opportunities to look after children because it's experience for high-school if I decide to further pursue babysitting.…
The hospital was fifteen miles away and I closed my eyes to forget about the awfully long time it was taking to get there. Suddenly, tears sprang to my eyes as a searing pain hit me straight in the abdomen. I felt intensely afraid for myself and my unborn child and I briefly wondered if this pain was a fraction of was it felt like to get shot in the stomach. We arrived at the hospital at exactly 5:00 p.m. and I was carried out of the car and placed on a gurney.…
I would never be the same person, never. I met someone, I hadn't met him in years and I never knew he could make a difference in my life. This man changed the way I thought, acted and dressed. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, otherwise known as my grandfather, or as we call him, Daddy. Everyone wonders why we call him Daddy, but I don't have an accurate answer.…
As I grew older, I never imagined becoming a mother at such a young age. When I was a child, I dreamed of finishing school, and going through all the motions that a young woman should, and of course, that involved attending prom, graduation, and college. When I was just seventeen years old, I found out that I was going to have a baby. So many things ran through my mind.…
Birth Story My mom was 24 years old when she found out she was pregnant with me. She missed her period so she took a pregnancy test, followed by a doctor’s appointment to make sure.…
