Personal Narrative: How Moving Affects My Life

Improved Essays
Moving is never fun. Especially not when it affects your whole life and how you live. About seven years ago, in 2009, I moved from Sacramento to San Diego. I was four years old and I was already moving. My Mom, Dad, Brother, friends, and I all took part in it. This was not a very exciting event. Before I moved I was a very happy and playful kid with all my friends which are considered family. Not that I’m not now, but I was very cheerful back then when I was young.

When I was told we were moving, I didn’t really get it. I was told that we were going to move down to see our friends in San Diego. I wasn’t told we were moving away from our friends because of work. I was kind of excited and kind of sad. I had mixed emotions about it all. I’ve never moved before and known what it feels like to move. I even asked, “Can we

Where’s my room?”
“We will see.” Said my Dad.
“Can it be the biggest one?”
“We will see, Lucas. Now let’s go in.”

In addition, the move had some effects on where we went, why we went, and some people changes. Since we went towards to coast more, the beach was easier to get to, but the mountains were harder. My backyard now compared to mine now is much smaller. The weather has definately changed too. Up there in Sacramento with the blazing heat, compared to down here with it 72 almost 24/7. Since it is more urban, there are more food options and cleaner ones too. There are more outdoor activities too. There are more ups than downs most of the time when you move.

Moving is never fun, but can change the way you live in positive manners too. It’s not alway that bad. This will always keep me on the positive side of moving. You should always keep looking on the bright side of things and expect it to be okay when you get there. You shouldn’t expect the best because when the worst happens, you feel terrible inside. When you don’t expect the best, but not the wost, the worst doesn’t feel too good. But the best

I will never forget the day that my parents told me we were moving to Colorado. I had a wide range of emotions towards this, I was both nervous and excited. I can explain it best as the moment before the fall on a roller coaster, the butterflies building up in your stomach as the bottom of the hill is not insight but the ride down is sure to be amazing. Much like roller coasters new experiences have no true end in sight but the journey along the way with all the twists and turns are sure to change you as a person. New experiences like moving help you grow as a person, because you are introduced to so many new things like being surrounded by new people who have many different viewpoints, to being in a new atmosphere with so many new opportunities all of which shape you as a person and they also present a great deal of life lessons.…

More specifically, when I reflect on the activities I had to undergo during relocation, I suppose moving from California to New Jersey was the toughesr. The atmosphere of each area had their own significant differences—the attitudes and requirements for social acceptance. Not to mention, I had to leave behind my beloved friends, a comfortable home, and a life I had grown accustomed to. I remember the fun I had while playing…

I loved moving. You would think that packing my belongings and meeting new people would make you hate moving, but for me that wasn’t the case. Changing environments was great for me; I loved being able to meet different people and trying new activities each time. In the beginning this was not the life I envisioned for myself. I saw myself always living on the island, going to college there, and maybe traveling around the world, but always going back home.…

The move was a bum for me because moving cities meant making new friends and that was something I definitely wasn't okay with. People would say,"You're going to get killed in Salinas" and for a moment I fell for it, so of course freaking out was my first instinct. Now that I've been in Salinas for three years going to four I'm getting used to living here. This community motivates me so much, more motivation than the one given in San Jose. While we lived in San Jose my brother and I had no idea of where we wanted to go to college or if we even wanted to go to college.…

After moving though, I can say that one of the hardest things for myself personally was leaving my family and friends behind. The second time around was definitely easier due to the fact that the second time I left I was thirteen and in high school (in England you start high school in grade seven). When I came back to England after being away for fifteen months I rekindled with all my childhood friends and we all went off to high school together. After my first year in high school I was saying good bye to all my childhood friends again, and this time the new friends that I had made. Since we have moved back to Canada we have not been able to afford to go back and visit at all, which has made us all very homesick.…
