Personal Narrative: How Junior High Band Impact My Life

Improved Essays
At the end of sixth grade, the junior high band came to my elementary school and performed for us. I watched in awe as students, not that much older than me, played music with their instruments. The flute players in the front row especially caught my attention; they were right next to the band directors and held their instruments up to the side, rather than down in front of them like the others. The flute had a high pitched melody and a bright silver color that appealed to me. That day, I signed up for the beginner band on the Coppinville Junior High registration sheet. However, at the young age of twelve, I did not realize that the next five years in band would impact my life so much. I have met several influential people, gained confidence in what I do, and developed my skills as a leader.

In junior high I was the low man on the totem pole and terrified of playing in front of people. I ended up being the last chair in eighth grade and decided then that even though I was not the best player, I could still practice and try to improve. By my freshman year, I had started gradually getting higher chairs in play tests. My sophomore year, I managed to get first chair in symphonic band and had my first solo in that year’s spring concert. That same year, I also tried out for all state band and district honor band where you have to learn twelve major scales, a melodic and harmonic scale, and the chromatic along with two prepared pieces of different styles, lyrical and technical. I was three points away from making the district honor band, much to my disappointment, but I decided to work even harder for the next audition. This year, I made the fourth chair out of ten flutes for district honor band and made white band, the second top band for all

It was the second week middle school when my band teacher had asked for me to stay after class: “Rachel you should think about quitting the band.” At that moment, I had felt my mind go blank; I was devastated. I had always known I was a bit behind in learning the notes and developing the sound of my tone; however, I had never once thought about quitting band. I loved music; just turning on the radio brightened my mood. I felt impatient in my other classes, waiting until I could go and pick up my instrument.…

Over time, I noticed that nothing had changed, and my musicianship was practically at a standstill. After nights of deep thought and some self-reflection, I ultimately realized that I am practicing my hardest every day to become a musician. Through my reflection I found that being a musician is not about being perfect or always getting the top chair and beating everyone else. Fortunately, there is much more to being a musician. Musicians of the highest level practice hard so that they can send a clear message, entertain, and lend the mastery of their instrument to the music.…

"Good better best, never let it rest, 'till your good is better and your better is best." These simple words were spoken to me by my high school band director Cheldon Williams on the first day of my high school experience. This, followed by my experience of marching band and my eventual learning of piano sparked a period of introspective thought, and mental growth, that transcended to where I am today. Never in my life did I think my hard work and dedication inspired by Mr. Williams words would land me at Interlochen Center for the Performing Arts Boarding School. These words became a core part of what I am, and from freshman year on would encourage me to never set a limit on my potential, and my overall worth.…

I sat in a crowded auditorium with nothing but my thoughts before I tried out for the Contra Costa County Honor Band. After about two hours I was led into the audition room drenched in sweat with my oboe in my trembling hand. I managed a pretty good audition, but after replaying the audition over and over in my head I doubted whether I would get in. A week later, my band director congratulated me on making principal oboe and handed me Maslanka's Symphony 7, with about 4 parts marked solo in bold letters.…

After my performance in the talent show, the feedback I got from students and other parents was so positive that I gained a new found confidence which spread to different aspects of my life. Once I left elementary school and began middle school I immediately joined the Jazz Band and Concert Band. In these groups I had to learn to work with others to make the music flow and sound pleasing to the ear. Again, I was able to use the skill I learned due to drumming in different situations and instances.…

I joined the Chorus and the Vocal Ensemble at the high school and continued to try and better myself as a musician. My music department also offered me other musical opportunities such as festivals. I have attended several festivals such as the Lakes Region music festival and the All New England music festival. These festivals allowed me to come together with other students from different schools that loved singing and performing as much as I did. Every time I perform at one of these festivals I am overwhelmed by how beautiful music can be when everyone I am working with is just as passionate as I am about the work we are doing and also extremely talented.…
