Personal Narrative-How I Was Socialized Into My Gender

Improved Essays
Asking how I was socialized into my gender is actually a funny question to me. My older sister and I are a little over a year apart in age, but couldn’t be more different. She is the girly girl and I am the tomboy. Our mother tried to buy me the same toys and clothes as her, but it never worked. I didn’t want to play with dolls, wear dresses or make sure my hair was long and pretty. I wanted to run hard and play in the dirt in my pants and sneakers. I think it only took a few years for our mother to give up on the notion that I would be like my sister and started treating me more like my brother. Not that I was raised as a boy, but my brother and I were the ones to cut grass and take out the trash, and my sister was taught to cook and neatly make the bed. To this day I don’t know what a ‘hospital corner’ is or why it’s important. My gender socialization continues today in that I work in the male dominated field of finance and accounting. I’ve always been very analytical, much like males, and even did well in math and science in school. Unfortunately, that wasn’t something that was encouraged in my family and I was even told that it was a waste of time for me to go into that field. My family felt that I should become a secretary or something so that’s where I started my …show more content…
I’ve been paid less than males in equivalent roles and have even been hired because I would accept less money for the same amount and quality of work. Even today, the older male partner in my firm does not think women should be accountants. He knows better than to state it outright, but it comes out in his actions and behaviors. Thankfully, the younger male partner thinks differently and has even mentioned me working my way up to partner someday. Time will tell whether that’s real or if it is a ploy to get me to work

Jessica Valenti is a prominent feminist, she’s written four books on the matter and currently writes for The Guardian about Women’s Issues. I looked into her pieces and found a big problem with what she was talking about. One article was her complaining about catcalling, where she tells women to walk the streets without fear, which is certainly a good thing. But another article a year later, by the same journalist, says that she misses it and wishes society would give more attention to women.…

20 Ways I Have Been Gendered 1. Being given toys that involve gender roles (Toy soldiers, playing cops and robbers, star wars action figures) These toys helped me re-enact male identified roles in the military, and behave like male identified characters in movies. I was given toys which had body types anatomically similar to my sex assigned at birth. I used these to practice how I was supposed to behave based on societies prescribed gender characteristics. 2.…

These roles are constructed by society and through social interactions. Slowly, we can determine which of our behavior receives positive sanctions and we begin to conform to those gender roles. In Spencer Cahill’s “Fashioning Gender Identity,” he explains that adults treat babies differently based on their sex, starting from the earliest days of infancy. This is the beginning of an identity that children begin to develop and eventually goes on to become a sex-class. By associating emotions, attitudes, and even colors with a specific gender, children learn that there are two different types of people.…

“I will not let my days slip away, I will stand up on to feet, and I’ll be complete.” ~Blixemi It all started when I was in second or third grade. I always seemed different and off from most girls and had a lot of friends that were female, which was normal in elementary, to have same-gender friends. Though I had so many friends to play with, I always seemed to wander to where the boys hung out. Usually, I would mess around with my younger brother’s friends.…

America has gotten sneaky. Sexism is not as blatantly deliberate in modern society as it was in the 20th century. There aren’t any ridiculous, oppressing advertisements like Van Heusen’s “Show her it’s a man’s world!” or ‘educational’ booklets like the Co-le Sales Company’s “Why You Should Beat Your Wife!” (“35 Extremely Sexist Ads”) but that doesn’t mean sexism has disappeared. These days sexism breeds within our minds; it has become an almost unspoken, traditional way of thinking.…

I was born, given a name as well as dressed as a girl since the day I came from my mother’s womb; that is, I am female and identify myself as a woman. Thus far, my family, friends, and whoever gets acquainted with me obviously see me and treat me as I am a woman. In her article, Lorber maintains, “Children 's relationships with same-gendered and different-gendered caretakers structure their self-identifications and personalities. Through cognitive development, children extract and apply to their own actions the appropriate behavior for those who belong in their own gender, as well as race, religion, ethnic group, and social class, rejecting what is not appropriate” (Lorber 94). Indeed, when I am out for school, work or just to hang out with friends, I sometimes do something like a man does.…

The warm Florida Gulf waves hit the sugar-like sand of the shore. In the distance, a thunderstorm rolled closer and closer, like a warning. It whisper-shouted at me to keep things as they were. "Don't mess anything up," it grumbled softly as it grew nearer. I ignored it.…

Ever since I was little I have been told to behave like a girl. This phrase has constantly been repeated by all my family members, friends, and even strangers. At a young age, gender roles can be very confusing. However, society makes sure to place boundaries and acknowledge differences between both roles. Even before we are born, as soon as our sex is discovered we are given a gender role and colors that we are supposed to wear in order for society to distinguish between boy and girl.…

As a child, one is bombarded with social stereotypical ideas. For example, boys are encouraged to play with trucks, cars and, GI Joes and girls are to play with dolls and do dainty things. Also toy stores color code areas designated for male and females; thus, making it pronounced that one should act a certain way. All in all, society continues to form ones behavior throughout their life whether it is through their jobs, education, friends or family. To sum up, though there are many theories about what it is that determines our gender, it is both nature and nurture that play hand in hand to shape ones identity.…

I did not give much thought to my biological sex during childhood. My first major reminder that I was a biological female was when I started puberty around age twelve. This was an external reminder that my body was transitioning from girl to woman. To me, the word ‘sex’ can be described as the genetic makeup of the chromosomes inside the human body. If you are a biological male you have XY chromosomes, and if you are a biological female you have XX chromosomes.…
