Personal Narrative: How Homework Changed My Life

Improved Essays
There was a time when I had given up on school. During my sophomore year of highschool I got a job working at a fast food restaurant. Earning money for a college and a car was a priority for me. I had a goal of having enough money to buy a car by the end of the year. My grades were pretty much A’s and B’s. I was balancing school and work just fine. I was getting enough time to do my homework and I was getting enough sleep. The job was easy, taking customer's orders and cleaning up. The hardest part of the job was closing up when everything had to be cleaned. Once junior year came along I started having problems. My grades were dropping at a fast rate, I was getting no sleep, and I was being bombarded with school work. My grade point average when from a three point four to …show more content…
Laziness consumed me. I would somedays just go straight to sleep and would just take a zero for homework. I got used to not doing my school work and staying up all night. I was getting horrible homework grades and my test grades were even worse. On top of getting bad grades I was not getting any sleep some nights. I started not care about school. I lost my grip on everything and I was starting to doubt my future success. I had lost my way and did not know how to get back on track. I have never had problems with school before, all my live I had been an A and B student. Right before I was on the edge of failing I decided to work less and to focus on school more. I passed junior year by a hair. During the summer I quit my job in hopes of redirecting myself to the right path. Without hard work, success will not happen and with the right mindset you can achieve any goal. A world of possibilities were now open for me. Distractions are the worst thing to have when you are a teen, it will help you lose your sense of direction. Not only did I learn about balance and how to keep it, I learned that education comes first before

Five years ago my educational standards for myself were extremely low. Although I was expected by my family to receive a post secondary education, I had no motivation to do so nor did I care. I just did not have any ambition to be successful. At that time, I thought to myself that I did not need to continue school after I received my high school diploma. Also, I kept thinking that college was not for everyone and it most definitely was not for me.…

High school came to an end May 15 for me, and I believed college wouldn't be much different, but I wasn't entirely correct. Many things changed which I had to accustom myself to, from living on my own, to making sure I ate correctly, but little did I know that I would have to change my study habits. For as long as I can recall, I have been using the same study habits throughout high school. I believed and was taught to memorize, but I also realized that even though I would pass my test with flying colors, I would find myself forgetting a majority of what I had memorized a month and or a week ago. Now that I am aware that the technique used in high school, will no longer apply in my college years, and years to come.…

I repetitively used the excuse that I was competing against the smartest students in the city, and that not doing well was to be expected. These low expectations caused my grades to plummet, and with my grades, my self-confidence fell too. By the time I was a sophomore, I was on the verge of failing all of my classes. I fell into a state where I believed that I couldn’t do anything with my life and there was nothing that I could do to change it. This toxic mindset bled into the other aspects of my life, inside and outside of school.…

Exceptions before entering the ninth grade are always painted with horror; the daunting Grade Point Average or GPA, the unmerciful teachers, and of course the idealistic notion of succeeding at everything: from grades to extracurriculars to having a good reputation. When I did enter high school the myths were somewhat true, the GPA became somewhat of a religious sacrifice of sanity, the teachers were okay, and the maintenance was overrated. One of the things that was different from the rest of my years in high school was the geography class. Geography was lead by Ms. Asmahan who’s been in my school since it was established. She gave the best hugs, had hundreds of books about the environment, and was known for saying “keep your mother at the door,” meaning work as if your mother was watching over you.…

High school was anything but easy, or at least that’s my outlook on the whole subject. Although I struggled with many things I was able to push through and make the best of a bad situation, but then again that kind of seems like a kind of motto that one could use to describe my last four years of high school. And even though I switched schools half way through high school with the help of some friends and a big help from art I was able to make it to school and complete my goal of graduating. I Switched schools half way through my second year because I was having a problem with turning in work. Once I was moved to this school I started to fail one class per semester, except for the last semester of my third year.…

I work hard to pay for my education. Every break from school I have worked to bring back money to help fund it. Other than scholarships, I am alone in paying for my school and I am happy to do so because I get to learn about the subjects that I love. Majoring in computer engineering is not only going to help me find a well-paying job, but also, since I care so much about this subject, it will help me maintain a desire to work hard. Last semester I was almost always playing ultimate frisbee for my team at Club Sports, or working on my computer doing homework.…
