Personal Narrative: How Hip Hop Changed My Life

Improved Essays
Black and white piano keys scattered the floor, dreams were crushed, and the future looked bleak. At that moment, I was presented with two options: to continue following my dreams or to live life in the moment and stop working to fulfill my ambitions. Both options had their pros and cons. If I quit and stopped trying to learn how to play the piano, and drums, my day would free up and I would be able to spend more time with my friends, and if I were to give up, nobody would blame me. I was never expected to teach myself three instruments and if I failed, I would just be another teenageer who had big dreams but didn’t reach them. However, from that moment on, I promised myself I would never fall into that statistic.

When I was 9-10 years old I lived with my mom, dad, and sister in Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania. Lake Ariel was a small town where all you would see is corn, fields, and woods. We had lived in this house for two years and I had a good group of friends that I had met from school or extracurricular activities. I attended Western Wayne Hamlin elementary school and was in fourth grade. The school district was huge, covering six townships, but my school was small.…

Back in junior high school, I fell so much in love with hip hop music, which was frequently played on our local radio that I got inspired and began to form my own melodies and rhymes. With my new found love in hip-hop, I used to have a notebook, where I wrote down lyrics of popular hip-hop songs I listened to. I involved myself into various talent shows where I performed original music. With my growing interest and the favorable response I received from performing the original melodies and rhymes I wrote, I took it upon myself to pursue music as a career. Thus, I kept on writing songs with every little chance I got.…

My excitement was like a like five year old on a sugar rush from eating too much Halloween candy. I had not played Rock Band in seven depressing years. The game forged a very destructive and negative atmosphere, due to the deafening sounds of the musical instruments and songs. I screamed into the microphone aggressively, attempting to follow the violent lyrics shown on the large television. I was anxiously moving along to the beat of the song, jumping energetically from side to side.…

I can remember the exact moment writing switched from something I enjoyed to something I considered a chore. It wasn’t a traumatic experience by any means, but it opened my eyes and showed me what kind of author I actually was. Around the age of nine and ten, I was intrigued by the idea of diaries and journals. I found that writing during these years came to me very easy. I can remember after my parents would say goodnight, I would lay awake in bed waiting to make sure they were settled back downstairs.…

Sometimes opportunities emerge and before realizing it they’ve changed your life forever. I’ve been a member of my school orchestra for about 8 years now. Every year the band gets the opportunity to travel to Florida for spring break and go to Disney World as well as perform there. For years it's been a band trip that they do every 4 years. Surprisingly during my 10th grade year it was announced that the orchestra would be going on the trip the next year as well.…

“A handful of moments I wished I could change, but I was carried away,” are the lyrics that remind a lot about myself. Growing up, and even about two years ago, I was insanely shy and did not talk much around people, friends, or family. The way I talked to people was in a timid, soft spoken way, which looking back, was awfully embarrassing. My friends and family would laugh at me because I could not talk well, and when I did talk, they acted as if I were a baby who just said its first words. With all of that nonsense going on, their idiotic response kind of made me not want to say anything anymore.…

I have felt many pressures, race is such a big problem among black people but as community can get over the hump of being pressured into a few stereotypes. From my own personal experience being a young black man growing up in many places of black being the majority such as Detroit, Chicago, New York I felt an amazing amount of comfort around these areas. Once I move down to La Vernia Texas, being enrolled into an all white school with a lot of Mexicans and the only black people could only fit on a bench in a hallway that we called “The Black Bench” in high school, I attended La Vernia school district for 7 years from 4th grade all the way to 10th grade in high school. My first encounter with this whole move, and experience this new…

The soul needs alimentation, commensurable to the mind and the body. I was sitting in my older brother’s long-standing room, starkly vacant preserve for a leather couch beneath an open window, dirty white walls, and a broken closet door. The smell of the old leather, baking in the arid Californian summer, fresh cut grass outside, and the musk of a secondhand room; I sat there in those halcyon days. I was fresh out of high school, contemplating my future, my life, and what I wanted. I wanted to engender something so that in ten years from now, I will have a pile of culminated projects and not a bunch of useless preserve files from video games.…
