Personal Narrative: How Did I Die

Decent Essays
On the 31st of December, 2016, I died.

How did I die?

I’d like to say I died rescuing a cute girl from a burning building. Or maybe struggling to the death against a crazed gunman, buying time for innocent civilians to reach safety. Even pushing a child out of the way of an oncoming truck would have made for a fine tale.

I wish I were that type of person.

No, all I spent all my time at home in front of my computer in a pitch black room, grinding MMORPG’s eighteen hours a day. My meals consisted of cup noodles and take away, with a side of cola and energy drinks. My parents thought I was diligently studying while they were away on business, trying my hardest to enter a good university, when in actual fact I was skipping school to play games.

Several years ago, when I was a brand new nurse’s aide, I had an experience with a dying patient that changed my perspective completely. I was scheduled to be a 1:1 companion with her for a 12 hour shift. The lady had received the news the day before that she most likely not live more than another week or two. And she was very much at peace with this, when talking to throughout my shift I inquired how she could be so calm and collected. She told me that death was just the next step.…

My lunches became salads, or wraps. I began to lose weight, and I went down to 125 in 8th grade, a low weight for a girl my height. I acquired the habit of weighing myself everyday, but if people asked how much I weighed, I lied and said that I couldn’t remember the last time I checked. In reality, I would just be mad at myself for being 128 from that huge burger and plate of fries I had the night before. When my brother started to date his girlfriend Madi, I saw that she would always drink protein shakes, and when she ate supper with us would only eat fruits and vegetables.…

I think about my husband dying a lot. Most young, newlyweds probably don’t think this way, at least not as often, but I do have a reason. While my husband was awaiting his second double-lung transplant, he could have died. He almost did. There were days during that time when I was begging him to hold on, to fight.…

May twenty-fourth, two-thousand, and one the day I was murdered. A few hours prior to my murder I was attending another monotonous meeting of the corporation an ordinary thing in my vapid life when the unimaginable occurred. There the employees and I were in the Meeting room chatting away when all of a sudden smoke is surrounding us, the smell was so foul and putrid I passed out. As I gradually began to regain consciousness I realized it was very chilly and there was quite a breeze, then I realized I was completely exposed, bound to a surgical table and all my Identification was gone. I spotted all the people from the meeting cadaver and lifeless in the exact same position I was in.…
