Personal Narrative: How Danc Dance Has Changed My Life

Improved Essays
I have always wanted to dance. For as long as I can remember I have looked on at a world I was not allowed to enter. Until I was thirteen financial hardship kept me from being able to take dance lessons.I was ecstatic when my mother finally let me go sign up for a class once a week. Soon I began wanting more and more, as a late starter I knew it was important to get the best training I could in order to catch up to my peers. I moved to local ballet school and began taking as many classes as possible. I started cleaning the bathrooms at the studio and working as a teachers assistant to help pay tuition as well as babysit outside of dance. I moved out at sixteen to pursue a professional training program at Mississippi School of the Arts and attend on financial aid. …show more content…
Everyday I feel myself becoming a stronger more independent person. I'm in love with the power and strength that dance has given me, the power over both my body and mind. I can now do things that I never would have imagined myself doing; I have gained so much resilience. Four years ago I would never have imagined myself doing three hours of dance class a day plus two to three hours of rehearsal a night. I have gained a love of pushing myself and my body to its limits everyday. Beginning this spring I will have the opportunity to choreograph my own piece on my junior class and I am looking forward to pushing my creative limits as well as pushing and encouraging my

Some people take dancing more seriously than others. There’s people that dance for fun at parties, there’s people that like dancing a lot so they join a dance team, and there is people that love dancing so much that they even want to major in it. Also, there’s people that are born to dance; they don’t have to try that hard to be about to perform a dance move, and there’s people that have to practice a lot to be able to do a dance move. Well, I am in the middle. I like dancing a lot that I’ve joined dance teams, and I dance when ever I am bored, but no, I am not going to major in dancing.…

From a young age, as a little girl who was initially forced to do ballet, dancing has opened up a level of creativity where I can challenge, strengthen, and utilize the art of dance in all realms of learning, from the stage to the classroom to my own introspection. Through movement, dance has allowed me to express my emotions, thoughts, and even words – as demonstrated in my “rocketry dance” – and emancipate myself from physical and mental confinement. Throughout high school I joined Mexican Folklorico and the Bollywood and Tahitian dance clubs, which intensified a passion for learning movement of different techniques, forms, and cultures. I challenged my own ability by creating my own movements and sharing that personal choreography with others. Performing at school assemblies washed adrenaline waves over me as I shared a personal choreography while the dancing made me feel skilled with grace, rhythm, and art.…

Dance is my hidden element. Although I’ve never participated in a sport directly through school, I’ve compensated for this; I dedicate much of my time and commitment to not only my education, but to Duet Dance Academy and the individuals who work and dance there. On average, I dance six or even seven days a week.…

Even though I wasn’t the happiest with my placement it still taught me good qualities.…

In dance, you learn quickly that without pure dedication and drive you will never be successful. While talent can come naturally, skill and technique only come with hard work. I spent countless hours in dance studios growing up, working tirelessly to hone these skills and perfect technique. A lifetime of dance taught me what it means to have discipline and dedication to a craft, values which I have also seen reflected in my clinical experiences. Medicine is a practice which calls for just as much discipline, dedication, and drive.…

Through dance, I illustrate that conditions and circumstances are not what define a person. It is their determination to succeed, their commitment to the things that they love, their willingness to put in the work needed to excel, and their ability to push limits and become the greatest version of themselves that they can be that defines them. As I help younger dancers, I teach them not only dance fundamentals, but I also help instill in them the discipline, confidence, passion, and sense of perseverance that dance has given…

Only in the arts does one obtain the ability to both find themselves and loose themselves simultaneously. For the performer, energising, exhilarating, a chance to become someone or something else, to become your alter ego, to charm, dazzle and delight audiences, and for the spectator, an intriguing and entertaining experience of the demonstration of human life, their wildest dreams or scariest nightmares Theatre and performing arts have always been a huge part of my life since a very young age, and with both a mother and father as dance teachers, there was never any doubt that this would be the area I would grow to love and choose to pursue at university. My parents have always been a huge inspiration to me, and as I grew up I realised I had inherited a natural talent for performing arts from them, and unsurprisingly, for dance in particular. I regularly attend dance classes, completing my IDTA medals in freestyle, and progressing with the same aim of completion in both Ballroom and Latin.…

Often times, the most important thing for an artist, or student, to do is reflect upon what they have learned, how they have changed, what they want to improve upon. I say this, because for an artist to become comfortable in their work, often means they have not pushed themselves to grow. I also believe that being able to see how far you have grown shows an artist their potential to continue to grow. For me, simply being in Iowa City with new teachers has helped me to grow exponentially as a dancer. Intermediate Jazz has helped me grow in a short eight weeks for a variety of reasons.…
